Yesterday, 488 years after Henry VIII banned pilgrimage, the new Archbishop of Canterbury stepped out from St Paul’s Cathedral, heading for Kent. I was among those with Dame Sarah Mullally as she kicked off her historic journey, the first by an archbishop in centuries. The day’s events began at 3pm with a service in the quire of St Paul’s. Pilgrims were blessed (as were their staffs), music rang out, and a silver shell – the pilgrim’s symbol – offered as a gift.
