Deputy chief to take over as head of York police

Deputy Chief Paulo Da Silva has been announced as the new chief of York Regional Police. Da Silva, a 29-year veteran with the force, is to begin his new role June 27. He takes over from Chief Jim MacSween who retires June 26, York police said in a news release Thursday. York police Chief Jim MacSween retires on June 26. MacSween announced his retirement in February, weeks after revealing the results of Project South, a bombshell investigation into corruption within the Toronto police.

One dead after daytime shooting at Wenderly Park in North York

A shooting in North York has left one dead. Police were called for reports of a shooting that occurred at Wenderly Park in the area of Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue just before 12:30, where a person with gunshot wounds was located. They were pronounced dead on scene, police said in a post to X. The suspect was arrested on scene, police added. There are no outstanding suspects. Those with information are asked to contact police.
