From the editor: Goodbye to Mark Kennedy — and to an era

Mark Kennedy was the first person I met at the Chattanooga Times Free Press. He cheerily greeted me in the lobby the day I interviewed here, more than two decades ago. Back then he ran the Life section and had a hand in recruiting, and a lot of people ended up employed at this newspaper simply because Mark gave their résumé the nod. On Tuesday, Mark will retire after 46 years as a newspaperman.

Ruby Rayner, the politics reporter for the Times Free Press, opened a news release from a local political organization and knew right away. "It was like copy-paste from ChatGPT," she said. That observation sparked a Slack exchange with federal impacts reporter Jules Feeney, followed by a conversation with News Editor Ricky Young about how governments are using artificial intelligence. From there, an idea took shape.

But here's the tension: 73% say they do not feel a responsibility to pay for news. Only 16% report having paid for news in the past 12 months. Just 8% say individual Americans have a responsibility to financially support newsgathering. As Pew put it: Americans value being informed, but feel a limited obligation to contribute financially to the systems that help inform them. That disconnect defines the challenge confronting us at the Times Free Press and journalists at newspapers across the nation.
