Alison James and her husband had been married for 40 years when he revealed he was gay. It was “tantamount to a bomb going off”, she says. It was five months short of my 60th birthday when my life as I’d known it for the previous 40 years ceased to exist. Sounds dramatic, I know, but that’s because it was. Tantamount to a bomb going off. My husband, Michael*, whom I’d been with since I was 17, revealed that he fancied other men and had done so since his early teens.

It’s the phrase chef Makoto Okuwa had in his head when he came back to Washington D.C. to open Love, Makoto. On a recent trip to Washington, D.C to experience the city and review The Westin DC Downtown, we had time to visit Love, Makoto to experience their Omakase Express lunch menu.
