The environmental dependence of ecological interaction networks

Abstract Interactions between species are often assumed to occur whenever species pairs co-occur, allowing us to reconstruct local ecological networks from a deterministic 'metaweb'. Thus, a species' set of metaweb interactions defines its Eltonian niche - the biotic conditions under which it can exist. However, both species and interactions may also have Grinnellian niches, reflecting relationships between probability of occurrence and environmental conditions.

Abstract Global environmental change may lead to changes in community structure and in species interactions, ultimately changing ecosystem functioning. Focusing on spatial variation in fungus–plant interactions across the rapidly changing Arctic, we quantified variation in the identity of interaction partners. We then related interaction turnover to variation in the bioclimatic environment by combining network analyses with general dissimilarity modelling.

Yet, little is known about how fungal networks are structured on the one hand by fungal responses to their environment (including their host plant) and on the other by responses to each other.
