The Napa Valley Climate Connection: A prescription for our kids' future
I am a pediatrician. I didn’t intend to become a climate advocate, writing about the health harms of fossil fuels but here I am — because climate change is a threat to the future for our kids. My climate story starts in Napa, where my parents live. In the fall of 2017, my parents knocked on my husband’s and my window around 4 a.m. “There’s a fire right near our house and it’s moving fast,” they said, their dogs barking, my 15-month-old son stirring in his sleep.
Big Oil has fouled the Bay Area's air for too long. You can put a stop to it this week
I met him just a few months after I started practicing medicine in Richmond: an animated 10-year-old, stubborn and funny, who loved baseball and not much else. He came to me wheezing, straight from the place he loved most — the baseball field in Richmond near his school. She was not exaggerating. I prescribed steroids, high-dose inhalers, stronger allergy medication. And yet he came back to my office every week or two for the duration of that baseball season, always wheezing.
Opinion: Curb refinery emissions to reduce Bay Area air pollution Original
As physicians, the past year’s challenges of COVID-19 and poor air quality from wildfires have focused our attention on the health of our lungs. Unfortunately, according to the American Lung Association, the Bay Area experiences the fifth highest year-round levels of air pollution in the entire nation, and that’s before you add in the extra burden of pollution from our annual wildfires. However, there is hope for addressing one source of local air pollution, particulate emissions from refineries.
Opinion: It’s climate change that keeps this doctor up at night Original
He came to me wheezing, ribs sucking in and out, his young body struggling to get words out. Oral steroids, inhalers — nothing made a difference. My patient, an 8-year-old boy, is suffering from asthma. His asthma is exacerbated by the polluted air he breathes and the planet on which he lives, which is rapidly warming. I am a primary care pediatrician and a mother of two children in Northern California. Half of my patients are publicly insured, children of construction workers and store clerks.
Missing the point on cities’ efforts to go all-electric to fight climate change
In summary Cities have begun to adopt policies to address the problems with burning fossil fuels in our homes that would protect our children’s health now. By Amanda Millstein, Richmond Dr. Amanda Millstein, Richmond pediatrician and founder of Climate Health Now. Re “High living costs make people poor”; Commentary, July 19, 2020 Dan Walters wrote an odd column that blames systemic poverty in California on “blue-state policies” that cut air pollution and address the climate crisis.
Opinion: Demanding moral clarity from Stanford on fossil fuels Original
Breaking News Poll: Most Californians don’t support easing restrictions amid COVID-19 pandemic This is a deeply painful time in America. We are being shaken awake to acknowledge and work to repair the deep crack in the foundation of this nation. This is not a time to be talking about anything other than the malignant forces of racism, hatred, violence and disease. But there is a deeply related issue that is undoubtedly worsened and exacerbated by racism and inequity: the climate crisis.
Opinion: Brentwood oil drilling threatens children’s health, climate
Breaking News Coronavirus: California set to top 4,000 COVID-19 deaths, adds nearly 2,000 new cases Just say no to backyard oil drilling in Brentwood. Your doctor recommends it, for your health. A proposed oil drilling project overlooks serious health consequences for local citizens, especially for the children in Brentwood and Contra Costa County.

Approving New Fracking Projects in the Middle of a Pandemic? Bad Idea.
By Amanda Millstein, Robert Dodge, originally published by Medium April 30, 2020 The world’s — and California’s — attention is deservedly focused right now on the COVID-19 public health crisis. The health threats posed by climate change, which is the end result of extracting, refining, and burning oil and gas, remain unchanged and existential. If we continue burning fossil fuels per usual, the coming decades will raise average temperatures in California by up to 8.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Opinion: Fix U.S. tax code to address climate change and our health
Breaking News Bernie Sanders takes strong 2-1 lead in California, says new poll The climate crisis is here. It is real and it is hurting our health. As physicians in Northern California, my colleagues and I see how climate change is making our patients sicker every day. We see infants and children with worsening asthma due to wildfire smoke exposure.

Congress Needs to Step up on Climate Emergency, Support Clean Energy and cut Big Oil Subsidies
The climate crisis is here. It is real and it is hurting our health. As physicians in Northern California, my colleagues and I see how climate change is making our patients sicker every day. We see infants and children with worsening asthma due to wildfire smoke exposure. We see adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring stronger and more toxic medication due to worsening air pollution caused by gas-powered cars.
Open Forum: Climate change is already affecting your health
Climate change is a health emergency. As physicians, we regularly see the ways in which it’s already damaging the health of our patients. A few examples from our practices: We have seen a 12-year-old boy forced to quit his beloved baseball team because his seasonal allergies are now so extreme that simply being on the baseball field makes him sick.
