1 Introduction Humans have the remarkable ability to learn novel words during their whole life, to memorize them, and to retrieve them from a mental dictionary or lexicon. However, unlike a dictionary, the mental lexicon is constantly updating connections between words and comprises several forms of representations: how the word is pronounced (phonological representation), how it is written (orthographical representation), and what it means (semantic representation).
