Are small modular reactors the solution to decarbonising the industry sector?
According to the International Energy Agency, the industry sector generates 45% of the total direct emissions from end-users. To put it simply, it will be almost impossible for the industry sector to reach net zero without finding solutions to assist in its decarbonisation. Nuclear may offer the solution – but only once small reactors are commercialised.

Quebec separatism is a dead issue—For now - The Hub
The following is an excerpt from Andrew McDougall’s , Sleeping Dogs: Quebec and the Stabilization of Canadian Federalism after 1995. On the night of the Quebec sovereignty referendum in 1995, after coming within a whisker of victory, the former Parti Québécois (PQ) premier of Quebec Jacques Parizeau told a large crowd of supporters that they would not have to wait another fifteen years for another chance to vote for independence.
Unveiling the Mysteries of Nature's Network and Healing Potential
Introduction As I sat down to watch the Netflix documentary "Fantastic Fungi," little did I know that I was about to embark on a mesmerising journey that would not only reaffirm my long-held intuitive belief about the interconnectedness of nature underneath our feet but also deeply touch my heart on a profoundly personal level. You see, I've always had an inexplicable connection with nature, especially the sprawling forests that beckon with an irresistible allure.
A whole new conflict around remote work
OTTAWA â The tentative deal that ended the largest federal strike in decades could open a whole new conflict around remote work, a demand that came second only to wages in the two-week standoff and isn’t going away. âItâs a strike that didnât need to happen,â said Linda Duxbury, a Chancellorâs professor of management at Carleton University and expert on work-life balance and remote work.
The federal public service strike ends on compromise over wages, remote work
The federal government and its biggest union ended a historic strike with a tentative deal that fell short of expectations for some public servants but set a standard for wages and working from home that others may follow. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) led more 155,000 federal employees on one of the countryâs largest strikes for nearly two weeks.
The invisible costs of service life and why fixing DVA is not the only answer
Reader's Contribution by Andrew McDougall So far, the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide has focused its interim recommendations on the bureaucracy of Government and DVA’s inability to provide timely services to veterans. Blowouts in DVA claims processing has highlighted requiring an immediate response; however, there are deeper systemic issues impacting DVA, and most likely, anyone who has served in the ADF.
Friendly advice for those leaving the ADF and feeling unsure about what’s next
Andrew McDougall A friend recently announced on social media that he was being medically discharged. After 30 years, that was the end of his service. While he was evidently crushed by the decision, there was certainly also an element of relief; he had pushed on for as long as he could. The response to his announcement was, without doubt, supportive. However, what struck me was the lack of real tangible advice. The best on offer was “get yourself a good DVA advocate.” Really?
Outlook 2023: SMRs: The answer to the world’s energy trilemma?
Events in Ukraine brought the issue of energy security to the forefront in 2022, galvanising the debate around alternative sources of energy, including nuclear. Often overlooked as an energy source that can play an integral role in the energy transition and a cleaner future is the small modular reactor (SMR). SMRs typically produce less than 300MWe compared with up to 1,600MWe for traditional reactors.
Training Mutuals in Quebec: A Model to Be Strengthened or Emulated?
In the past few years, skills development for working age adults has become increasingly important, especially in the context of technological change and an aging population. Despite a range of policy incentives to encourage workers and firms to invest in training, less-qualified individuals and employees in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are less likely to participate, even if they would benefit from it greatly.
Student immigration visas are a money-making business
Both Canada and the U.S. have a paradoxical history of immigration. They depend on immigrants to people Indigenous lands and fuel economic growth but simultaneously discriminate against new arrivals by treating them as racially and ethnically inferior. Civil rights and human rights movements, as well as economic imperatives, have helped reduce overt discrimination, but treating immigrants unequally always courses just below the surface.
Dembele rejects release offer from Barcelona
LUIS F. ROJO ADAPTED BY ANDREW MCDOUGALL Actualizado 01/02/2022 - 18:36 Ousmane Dembele will remain at Barcelona until the end of the season after rejecting a release offer from the club. The Blaugrana were trying to sell the French winger during the January window, but despite interest from clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham and Chelsea, no agreement was reached.
Real Madrid lead race for Endrick: Manchester United, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal in close pursuit
Palmeiras forward Endrick Felipe Moreira de Sousa is just 15 years old and yet to play a senior game, but he already has Europe's top clubs keeping an eye on him, with Real Madrid leading the race to land his signature. Videos have emerged in recent months showing Endrick's exploits at youth level, where he has an impressive scoring record. Most recently, he scored a spectacular overhead kick in the Copinha, a tournament for U20 teams in Sao Paulo.
Possible destinations for Ousmane Dembele: Chelsea, Newcastle, Manchester United...
Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele's future looks more uncertain than ever after it emerged that the club would try to sell him this month if he does not sign a contract extension. The Frenchman's current deal at the Camp Nou expires this summer but the club are desperate not to lose him for nothing. After months of indecision, it seems the club have lost patience and are looking to try to cut their losses, but where could Dembele end up?
PSG on the horizon for Zidane
It is looking increasingly likely that Zinedine Zidane could be heading to Paris Saint-Germain in the near future, with many within the club certain that he'll be in charge for next season. The Ligue 1 leaders are plotting a major restructure, as well as preparing for Kylian Mbappe's possible departure, and it seems they believe the former Real Madrid head coach is the right man to lead them into a new era and instil order on a disjointed squad.
Vinicius vs Alves: An unlikely Clasico duel
When Real Madrid and Barcelona face off in Riyadh on Wednesday night, there will be a battle down one flank that few would have expected just a few months ago: Vinicius against Dani Alves. Before Alves' surprise return to Barcelona in November, no one would have thought that he might be lining up to take on compatriot Vinicius in the Supercopa. The big revelation of Los Blancos' season against a Blaugrana stalwart back for an unexpected swansong.
Ancelotti on Supercopa semi-final against Barcelona: It's going to be an even game Original
Carlo Ancelotti in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Supercopa de Espana semi-final against Barcelona said he expects an even game on Wednesday night. The Real Madrid head coach rejected any notion of favourites status for his side and also admitted that he hasn't fully decided his starting XI just yet for the big game. "I'd be worried if the players though we are favourites, but they don't," said Ancelotti. "They think we have to give it everything to win.
Real Madrid cool interest in Antonio Rudiger
Real Madrid are no longer interested in signing Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger, who they had previously been targeting on a free transfer as his current contract is set to expire next summer. The German defender is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with another club as he has less than six months remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge, and he has been linked with the likes of Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, as well as Real Madrid.
Laporta: I'm going to sign Haaland for Barcelona in the summer
Barcelona president Joan Laporta believes his club will be in the hunt for Erling Haaland this summer, as he has made the Borussia Dortmund striker his top transfer target. It may come to the surprise of many, but Laporta insists that the Blaugrana will have the money necessary to make a play for the Norway international in the next transfer window. "I'm going to sign Haaland next summer," Laporta is believed to have told colleagues behind closed doors.
Recapping Barcelona's nightmare 2021: Messi's exit, Champions League elimination and more
As the year comes to a close, it's fair to say that 2021 has, on the whole, been one to forget for Barcelona fans. It was the year that saw Lionel Messi leave the club, then in his absence the team failed to make it to the Champions League knockout stage and they end the calendar year 18 points behind LaLiga Santander leaders Real Madrid. Those are just the highlights, so to speak, of a year that Blaugrana fans will be glad to see the back of.
Ferran Torres signs for Barcelona
Ferran Torres is officially a Barcelona player after completing a move from Manchester City in a deal worth up to 65 million euros. The Spain international has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal at the Camp Nou. Joan Laporta promised Xavi Hernandez that he would do his all to give him what he wants, and the Blaugrana president is keeping his word. The new head coach wanted to strengthen the attack with a player who can score, and the club have landed their man.
Lukaku the key to Chelsea's title hopes
If Chelsea are to remain in the Premier League title fight, then Romelu Lukaku will likely play a key role. His return to action could not have been more timely, as he grabbed a goal as the Blues got back to winning ways on Boxing Day. The Belgian had missed two league games after testing positive for COVID-19, both of which Chelsea drew, but he came on as a half-time substitute against Aston Villa on Sunday and scored the winning goal.
Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles heading to Roma
Ainsley Maitland-Niles appears set for a January move to Jose Mourinho's Roma on a loan deal from Arsenal, which will include an option to buy. Mourinho is keen on making the versatile Englishman his first signing of the window and, if all goes to plan, he will travel to Italy when he has recovered from COVID-19, having tested positive last week.
Fede Valverde: Ancelotti's utility man
Fede Valverde is a key player for Carlo Ancelotti, even if he doesn't have a clearly defined role. The Real Madrid boss has shown that he likes to have the Uruguayan on the pitch, even if it means having to play him at full-back. Having begun the season as a starter, Valverde is back from injury and resuming his role as Ancelotti's dependable utility man.
Militao's influence at Real Madrid: Just three losses in 39 games
As the calendar year draws to a close, Real Madrid centre-back Eder Militao can look back on it and feel content, having established himself as a key player at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and proved many doubters wrong. The Brazilian looked to be rather on the outside of things a year ago, but in every crisis there is opportunity and in January 2021 he rose to the challenge and hasn't looked back since.
Vinicius from Miami: 2022 will be Real Madrid's year
JUAN IGNACIO GARCÍA-OCHOA ADAPTED BY ANDREW MCDOUGALL Actualizado 27/12/2021 - 09:57 Speaking whilst on holiday in the United States, Vinicius Junior has assured a young fan that the new year will be a good one for Real Madrid. The Brazilian winger was strolling along near Ocean Drive in Miami with some friends when approached by an Argentinian in a Manchester City shirt who asked for a photo. Tomas Larisgoitia got more than just a photo from the Real Madrid star, however.
Braithwaite's ordeal with his father: I thought, does he really love me?
Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite has commented on his difficult relationship with his father and admits to having felt unloved as a child. The Danish international has said his father was always very hard on him, although the latter believed he was doing the best thing for his son. "My dad, I've said it a lot, was really tough on me when I was a kid," Martin Braithwaite told a documentary by '433' and 'Lucky Mental'. "And it was difficult for me because I didn't really understand why.
Ancelotti takes seven academy players to Bilbao: Who are they?
Real Madrid travel to San Mames on Wednesday to take on Athletic Club in a rearranged LaLiga Santander fixture and will do so with a host of unfamiliar faces in the group as COVID-19 has forced Carlo Ancelotti to turn to the academy for numbers. The Italian boss has selected a total of seven academy players for the trip to Bilbao to cover the absence of 11 first team players.
PSG vs Real Madrid: The tie of the century
After the embarrassing and controversial mistake which led to the Champions League last 16 draw being redone, Real Madrid were drawn to face Paris Saint-Germain in what promises to be one of the most epic and intriguing encounters in recent years. There is no shortage of bad blood between the two clubs, while there may not have been another tie this century with as many fascinating storylines. Mbappe, already a Real Madrid player?
Barcelona not giving up on Haaland
You could be forgiven for thinking that a club in Barcelona's financial situation would not be going after a player like Erling Haaland, but Joan Laporta is determined to find a way to make it work. It's no secret that Barcelona badly need goals, and few players in Europe guarantee them the way Haaland does. The Borussia Dortmund striker has been a long-term target for Laporta and he has been dreaming of bringing him to the Camp Nou since returning as president.
Champions League redraw is latest chapter in Real Madrid and UEFA's war
Real Madrid are upset with the restaged Champions League last-16 draw and are making this the latest battleground in their ongoing war with UEFA. Los Blancos were originally drawn to play Benfica before the draw had to be done over and they were paired with Paris Saint-Germain.
Lewandowski 27-25 Barcelona: The harsh reality
Ahead of Barcelona's visit to the Allianz Arena in Munich, there is an awkward statistic that lays bare the harsh reality of their season so far: Robert Lewandowski has more goals in 2021/22 than the whole Blaugrana team. The Polish striker remains in incredible form and has 27 goals in 21 games this season. Barcelona as a whole have managed just 25 goals in all competitions. In the Champions League, the setting in which they will meet on Wednesday, the same comparison remains true.
Barcelona to play second season of construction work away from Camp Nou
Barcelona on Wednesday presented plans which, if ratified by members, will see a huge redevelopment of the Camp Nou and surrounding area which will take four years to complete and mean the team spends a season playing away from their traditional home. The Espai Barca project also includes selling the naming rights to the stadium and Barcelona have revealed that they are in discussions with various potential partners over deals that range between 10 and 20 years in length.
Real Madrid vs Athletic Club: Predicted line-ups, kick-off time, how and where to watch on TV and online
On Wednesday evening Real Madrid host Athletic Club in their rescheduled LaLiga Santander Matchday 9 clash. Los Blancos will be looking to extend their excellent run of form, as well as their lead over rivals Atletico Madrid at the top of the table. After drawing with Osasuna on October 27, Carlo Ancelotti's side have won six on the trot, racking up victories against Elche, Shakhtar Donetsk, Rayo Vallecano, Granada, Sheriff Tiraspol and Sevilla.
Amadou Haidara: The player Rangnick wants to change Manchester United's style
New Manchester United interim manager - and future senior football adviser - Ralf Rangnick has wasted little time in beginning his revolution at Old Trafford and has identified some top targets for the January transfer window, including RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara. Rangnick himself signed the Mali international for the German club back in 2019, so he knows what he's all about and he believes he could be key to changing the Red Devils' playing style and moulding the side in his own image.
Saul Niguez and Bryan Gil among the most expensive out-of-favour players in Europe
Spanish players Saul Niguez and Bryan Gil, of Chelsea and Spurs respectively, form part of a list of the most expensive players with the least minutes played this season in Europe. The duo both arrived in England in the summer just gone, but have found game time hard to come by in the Premier League. Their situations are, on the one hand, quite different, but also very similar: both haven't played as much as they would have liked to in 2021/22.
Figo: Barcelona have improved, but football is something more
Former Real Madrid and Barcelona player Luis Figo has been talking about various footballing topics and he says he has noted an improvement in Barcelona's play under Xavi but that it is too soon to read too much into it. Currently working for UEFA, the former Portugal international was speaking at an event promoting safer alcohol consumption, specifically drinking wine in moderation, but, as if it could be any other way, conversation eventually turned to football.
Dembele is Xavi's superstar
If there is one player who has instantly benefitted from Xavi Hernandez's arrival as Barcelona head coach then perhaps it is Ousmane Dembele, who is ready to thrive with the prominence given to him by the new boss and play like a real star and difference maker. The French winger's quality had never been in doubt, but injuries and other issues have stalled his progress in Catalonia.
Courtois: We can't think of Hazard as just any old player, he's not
Ahead of Real Madrid's crucial Champions League trip to Sheriff Tiraspol, Thibaut Courtois has spoken about the quality of Eden Hazard, who he believes still has a lot to offer. The former Chelsea winger has been fading out of the picture under Carlo Ancelotti this season, but his compatriot hasn't lost faith. "I don't think he's sad. It's quickly forgotten how good a player he is and you can't forget that quality," Courtois said at his press conference.
Lewandowski briliance sees Bayern Munich maintain perfect record
Bayern Munich have retained their perfect record in this season's Champions League with a 2-1 win at Dynamo Kyiv. The victory means that the German side have five wins from five in Group E and have sealed top spot with a game to spare. Barcelona and Benfica will now scrap it out for second place, but there will be no toppling the relentless Bavarians who look unstoppable in Europe this campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain will pay a high price if they renew Mbappe deal
Paris Saint-Germain want to sort out Kylian Mbappe's future, but they will need to pay a high price if they are to get their way and keep him for another year. The France international's contract expires at the end of this season and losing one of the top talents in world football, especially at such a young age, for nothing, would be a disaster for PSG on many levels.
Xavi: The keys to leadership
Xavi Hernandez arrives at Barcelona at a time when they need a leader, taking over a group of players who have been notably affected by the atmosphere around the club owing to poor results and worse financial management. His mission is to rebuild, revitalise and restore. No small ask, and it is perhaps a double-edged sword that the Blaugrana world is unanimous in seeing him as the saviour - he has almost no one to win over, but high expectations to live up to.
Real Madrid worried about tough-looking calendar: We'll be a broken team
Real Madrid have expressed their concern about the gruelling schedule coming up after the international break, as they are worried about the physical toll it will take on their players. Los Blancos' trip to Granada on Sunday will be the first of seven games in four weeks before Christmas, with everything at stake in LaLiga Santander, where they are currently second, and the Champions League, where they top the group but have little margin for error.
Modric shines despite penalty miss as Croatia win
Real Madrid's midfield maestro Luka Modric marked his 143rd Croatia cap with a stellar performance in a 3-0 win over Cyprus, despite a second-half penalty miss. Modric assisted Ivan Perisic's opener and was the standout performer as Croatia coasted to a victory that puts them top of their World Cup qualifying group, level on points with Russia.
Designing Paid and Protected Employment Leaves for Short-Term Sickness and Caregiving
It’s time to permanently overhaul Canada’s short-term sickness- and caregiving-leave regimes Montreal — The COVID-19 pandemic exposed large gaps in sickness and caregiving leave provisions available to workers across the country. To make up for these shortcomings, federal, provincial and territorial governments had to introduce a suite of emergency income-support programs and job-protection laws.
Joao Felix sent off as Atletico are held by Athletic
Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club both maintained their unbeaten starts to the 2021/22 LaLiga Santander season as they shared the spoils in a goalless draw at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday. The result takes Atleti top of the table - for now, at least - and also means that Los Leones have only conceded one goal in their opening five games.

Citation II: Global Jet | Flickr.com, Duck image: Bill Gracey | Flickr.com After an engine is destroyed during a night take-off, a corporate jet struggles to stay airborne By Andrew McDougall We started the take-off roll at approximately 9.15 at night in August, some years ago. The owners of the Citation II were keen skiers and this was one of about 10 trips from Cooma we had completed that season. As far as I was concerned, it was going to be just another night at the office.
