Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are highly heterogeneous in terms of genetics, behaviour and pathology [1–3]. ASD is characterized by core behavioural domains such as impaired social communication and interactions, repetitive behaviour and restricted interests [1,2]. A clinical diagnosis of ASD is based primarily upon behaviour; however, ASD encompasses a range of syndromes and severity [3].

Abstract The neuronal cell adhesion molecule contactin-4 (CNTN4) has been genetically linked to autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other psychiatric disorders. The Cntn4-deficient mouse model has previously shown that CNTN4 has important roles in axon guidance and synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. However, the pathogenesis and functional role of CNTN4 in the cortex have not yet been investigated.
