The last File valued the event. This one values the access, and access turned out to be the more lucrative thing to own. Spotify has never written a song, recorded a vocal, or sat in the room while a record was made. It built the pipe the music travels through, and then it set the price of the water. Twenty years in, that has made it the single most powerful force in the music business, and it managed it without contributing a single note to the art it sells. The scale is close to absurd.
