Biden’s executive order is a strong step forward - as LGBTQ youth need support
It was inspiring to be at the White House’s Pride celebration last week, surrounded by fellow LGBTQ leaders and the young people we serve, as President Biden not only acknowledged Pride Month but took historic action to advance the rights of LGBTQ Americans.
Announcing The Trevor Project’s International Journey, Starting With Life-Saving Crisis Services for LGBTQ Youth in Mexico
Ten years ago, I began my journey with The Trevor Project as a Lifeline volunteer crisis counselor, imbued with a passion to save the lives of LGBTQ youth and help them envision a brighter future. At the time, Trevor was a small, but mighty, team, predominantly focused on our 24/7 crisis services and ensuring there was always an accepting, affirming voice that LGBTQ youth could reach whenever they needed.

Harmful bills, political attacks are taking a toll on LGBTQ youth’s mental health
Last week, the governor of South Dakota signed the first anti-transgender bill of 2022 into law, banning trans women and girls from playing on school sports teams that match their gender identity. While it was expected, the news is nonetheless heartbreaking, as it foreshadows an incredibly tough year ahead for LGBTQ youth. We’re less than six weeks into 2022 and already tracking more than 150 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced across the country.

We must urgently support LGBTQ youth in Tennessee and end suicide everywhere | Opinion

Editor's note: This commentary explores suicide. If you are at risk, please stop here and contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for support at 1-800-273-8255. It’s gut wrenching to read stories of young people dying by suicide. It’s especially painful when the stories involve LGBTQ kids who remind me of my younger self.

My organization recently unveiled a new brand identity.
Opinion: Ban on transgender athletes will put mental health of youth at risk
Schools should be safe, affirming spaces where all students are set up for academic success and provided with equal opportunity to pursue their talents — not a source of discrimination and harassment. Sadly, some Texas state lawmakers are working overtime to make life harder for transgender and nonbinary students, a group of young people who already face significantly increased risk for bullying, depression and suicide.
Why a record for LGBTI representation at Tokyo 2020 matters
The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo featured 172 athletes who identify as LGBTI – more than the total number of LGBTI athletes who have participated in all previous Summer and Winter Games; Representation in sports and at such a global level can dramatically impact the collective well-being of a marginalized group and even save lives; In research from the Trevor project, LGBTI youth who participated in sports reported nearly 20% lower rates of depressive symptoms compared to those who do not.
Addressing the Flaws in our Mental Healthcare System Could Save Young LGBTQ Lives
To say that the past year has been challenging is an understatement. The pandemic completely uprooted people’s lives and left many grappling with more fear and uncertainty than ever before—bringing conversations around mental health to the national stage. Yet, marginalized groups who have long faced disparities in the mental healthcare system like LGBTQ youth —especially those who are transgender and people of color—are still too often left out of the conversation.

Guest Essay June 28, 2021, 5:00 a.m. ET Credit...Bryan Anselm/Redux By Amit Paley Mr. Paley is the C.E.O. and executive director of The Trevor Project. Last week, Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Carl Nassib made the barrier-breaking decision to publicly come out as gay, becoming the first active player in the N.F.L. to do so. Pass the Equality Act: Discriminatory rhetoric and laws are devastating to LGBTQ youth
On Thursday, the United States House of Representatives passed the Equality Act, landmark legislation that would protect LGBTQ people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in everyday life. If approved by the Senate and signed by President Joe Biden, it would be the most sweeping federal LGBTQ civil rights bill to ever become law.
Discriminatory Rhetoric Is Devastating to LGBTQ Youth
I hear from young people on the receiving end of discriminatory remarks that come from lawmakers and other powerful people. It's wrong and unfair.

Mental health programs cannot ignore Black LGBTQ/SGL youth
OPINION: A global pandemic and systemic racism have the potential to impact Black LGBTQ/SGL youth’s mental health in ways they might not yet realize A Black LGBTQ Lives Matter flag flies during Black Trans Lives Matter march on June 27, 2020 in London, England.
The coronavirus has shrunk LGBTQ youth's safe spaces
• Young LGBTQ people already had higher risk of mental health problems. • The coronavirus has both robbed them of access to supportive environments and increased negative contacts. • Better data is needed to understand the impact on the young LGBTQ community.
Be that One Accepting Adult to Help End LGBTQ Youth Suicide
2020 has been characterized by multiple crises — the COVID-19 pandemic, mass unemployment, and senseless violence against Black Americans — all of which have deeply impacted so many. The implications of these crises on mental health are just starting to be understood. But youth suicide still remains the second leading cause of death among young people and continues to disproportionately impact lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.

Sadr Pursues Image to Match His Power
NAJAF, Iraq -- When the revered head of Iraq's largest Shiite opposition group was assassinated in 1999, the mantle of leadership passed to an unexpected heir: Moqtada al-Sadr, then a 25-year-old video game aficionado who oversaw the movement's security forces. Sadr, now 34, has since emerged as an ardent nationalist who commands the support of hundreds of thousands of devotees and the scorn of those who see him as a thuggish militia leader of limited intellect.
Closing the digital gap in pharma

How pharma companies can better understand patients
Consider the following: a 25-year-old, healthy male notices he is developing itchy, scaly patches of skin. He has not experienced anything similar before, so he goes online to do some research. Soon, he finds photos and descriptions that seem to match his symptoms and decides he has psoriasis. He pores over content in patient forums and reads strong views on which medications work best.

Reporter For Post Is Fatally Shot In Baghdad
BAGHDAD, Oct. 14 -- On Sunday afternoon, Salih Saif Aldin set out for one of Baghdad's most dangerous neighborhoods. He knew exactly where to go. He nodded, smiled, grabbed his camera. There was nothing he needed to say. Saif Aldin always came back -- from death threats, from beatings, from kidnappings, from detentions by American soldiers, from the country's most notorious and deadly terrain -- but on Sunday he didn't.
Widespread Female Circumcision Highlights the Plight of Kurdish Women
Sheelan Anwar Omer, a shy 7-year-old Kurdish girl, bounded into her neighbor's house with an ear-to-ear smile, looking for the party her mother had promised. There was no celebration. Instead, a local woman quickly locked a rusty red door behind Sheelan, who looked bewildered when her mother ordered the girl to remove her underpants. Sheelan began to whimper, then tremble, while the women pushed apart her legs and a midwife raised a stainless-steel razor blade in the air.
