There’s rarely accountability for the deaths of aid workers. It’s time that changed – and Australia can help Original
We are now told by the same IDF [Israeli Defense Force] that there is no wrongdoing worth referring to a criminal investigation. As a family, we do not believe this to be accurate, and we continue to call for an independent investigation. In their statement, the family of Zomi Frankcom, the Australian aid worker who was killed in Gaza in an Israeli air strike in 2024, expressed their deep disappointment.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said Israel’s “deliberate and consistent targeting of journalists” was “aimed at concealing the truth of its aggressive acts against Lebanon”, despite a ceasefire that had been agreed to by Israel days earlier.

Aid Workers Around The World Are In Greater Danger Than Ever. Will A New Un Declaration Protect Them?
Aid workers face more difficult and dangerous conditions in carrying out their work than ever before. The United Nations declared 2024 the worst year on record, with 385 aid workers killed in 20 countries. That was, in turn, almost 100 more deaths than in 2023. As Deputy UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Msuya briefed the UN Security Council: We have become numb to this violence. Being shot at is not – I repeat, NOT – part of our job. In 2025, 300 aid workers have been killed as of September.

Air-dropping food into Gaza is a ‘smokescreen’ - this is what must be done to prevent mass starvation
Israel partially lifted its aid blockade of Gaza this week in response to intensifying international pressure over the man-made famine in the devastated coastal strip. The United Arab Emirates and Jordan airdropped 25 tonnes of food and humanitarian supplies on Sunday. Israel has further announced daily pauses in its military strikes on Gaza and the opening of humanitarian corridors to facilitate UN aid deliveries. Israel reports it has permitted 70 trucks per day into the strip since May 19.

Israel's aid delivery plans for Gaza: why they're problematic
Israel’s decision to transfer responsibility for distributing aid in Gaza through a new system that would sideline the UN and other aid agencies has been roundly rejected by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Two dozen countries and the wider humanitarian aid network have also reacted strongly against the decision. Amra Lee explains why Israel’s move is so problematic.
Israel’s new aid delivery system for Gaza is sparking outrage. Why is it so problematic?
Some 2.1 million Gazans are facing critical hunger levels, with many at risk of famine following Israel’s 11-week blockade on aid intended to pressure Hamas. According to the United Nations, 57 children have already died from malnutrition since the aid blockade began on March 2. A further 14,000 children under 5 years old are at risk of severe cases of malnutrition over the next year.

Australia’s Role in a Shifting World Order: Stepping up to Protect Civilians and International Law
With global conflict escalating and civilian protections eroding, Australia has a strategic opportunity to assert leadership in upholding international humanitarian law. By leveraging diplomatic influence and building cross-regional alliances, Australia can strengthen global adherence to the rules-based order, protecting civilians, and advancing global stability. With global conflict escalating—from Gaza to Ukraine, Sudan, and Myanmar—civilians are increasingly under threat.
Protecting frontline humanitarians: Australia’s role as a middle power
The world is currently experiencing the highest level of armed conflict since the Second World War. As part of this, humanitarian aid worker deaths are soaring, with 2024 marking the deadliest year on record. From Gaza to Sudan, Myanmar, and Ukraine, attacks on aid workers continue with impunity, including the deliberate targeting of those who provided lifesaving aid to 116 million people last year.

Beyond words: Australia must act to protect civilians in Gaza and Lebanon
As regional tensions escalate threats to civilians across the Middle East, our leaders need to take concrete steps to prevent further civilian harm. Those steps should include an immediate embargo on arms and arms components destined for Israel, an affirmation of the existence of the Palestinian state, and expanding targeted sanctions to include Israeli leaders who are responsible and who call for continued unrestricted warfare in Gaza.
