Amy Silverstein on improving organ donor drug regimens Amy Silverstein on improving organ donor drug regimens 02:47 Our commentary is from Amy Silverstein, one of this nation's longest-surviving heart transplant recipients, and author of "Sick Girl" and "My Glory Was I Had Such Friends": Last night, I climbed the 13 stairs that lead to my bedroom, and when I got to the top, I put my hand to my heart and said thank you, because the climb was so easy, because the climb was propelled by a...
My Transplanted Heart and I Will Die Soon
Credit Credit... By Marine Buffard Today, I will explain to my healthy transplanted heart why, in what may be a matter of days or weeks at best, she - well, we - will die. I slide my hand across my chest and speak aloud, palm to my heart's crisp beating. "I'm so sorry, sweet girl." She is not used to hearing me this way, outside my head, beyond the body we share. Up until now, the understanding between us has been internal.
How to Think Like a Woman | Grove Atlantic
As a young woman growing up in small-town Iowa, Regan Penaluna daydreamed about the big questions: Who are we and what is this strange world we find ourselves in? In college she fell in love with philosophy and chose to pursue it as an academician, the first step, she believed, to becoming a self-determined person living a life of the mind.
Vaccine Mandates: A Transplant Recipient's Perspective
In this issue of the American Journal of Transplantation, two articles highlight recent COVID-19 vaccine mandates for transplant recipients.[1,2] As a heart transplant recipient of nearly 34 years, I am decidedly in favor of mandatory COVID-19 vaccination for all organ transplant candidates and health-care workers. My viewpoint is rooted in patient-centric truths that come from my hard-earned experience in the transplant trenches.

Are old orthodoxies about CSR blocking new opportunities?
Stories about the blurring lines between business and social benefit rarely begin with large guns. But it turns out that companies can learn a lot from looking at the history of artillery — the big cannons that would get drawn to the edge of a battlefield, first by horses and later by large trucks, to shell the enemy from a distance.

Embracing a new business model for sustaining value
Companies can no longer relegate corporate social responsibilities to "check-the-box" initiatives. Instead, the rapid pace of technological change and individuals' demand for corporate transparency have put significant pressure on businesses to address pervasive societal issues. Now, purpose may need to take center stage in corporate strategy as private companies evolve into social enterprises.
"Leadership and the breast cancer movement" by Amy Silverstein
The breast cancer movement stays away from power struggles and superiority complexes. These women figured out that in order to stay organized and in control, every woman needed to feel included. The nature of the issue of the movement helps as well. Since most of these women fought the disease either themselves or with others, they understand how important a supportive environment contributes to a person's well-being. This support flows into the movement and contributes to the sense of togetherness.
A Late-Night Conversation, 10 Days Before I Thought I Was Going to Die - My Glory Was I Had Such Friends
"I just love you so much, Ann," I say, gripping her tighter. "I love you too, Ames." After a few minutes, the pain subsides. She leads me back to my bed and pulls the blanket up to my chin. "There you go." She pulls her chair up close beside me, takes my hand, and holds it for a long, long time — 10 minutes, 15, 20. We sit wordlessly, staring with unfocused eyes.
They were my life support: My life-threatening health crisis brought out the best in my friends
We hear someone push open the door with a “Morning, morning.” It’s Dr. Kobashigawa. “Hello, hello.” He shakes my hand, then Joy’s. “I think I’ll take a seat before examining you, if that’s all right.” He asks me how my night was, and I tell him I woke with a terrible period. “It’s bringing so much extra pain,” I say, hugging my thighs to my chest for a few seconds before breathlessness forces me to let them go. “Can she take, maybe, just one Advil?” Joy asks. Dr. Kobashigawa flashes his warm smile.

Rice prices skyrocket in North Korea
The price of rice in North Korea has jumped from 5,000 won per kilogram to 9,000 won, Nambuk Story reported. Other groceries have also increased in price by approximately 70 percent. As the English-language Ask A Korean! blog explains, the jump is likely the result of China's crackdown against smuggling across the China-North Korea border. 'Baby box' ban proposed by United Nations
In multiple European countries, women who recently gave birth are legally allowed to leave their newborns in warm, publically-accessible incubators. The incubators are found at some hospitals and can be opened from the outside. The point of these incubators, often called baby boxes, is to allow mothers to abandon unwanted babies in a safe and anonymous way.

If you liked it then you should have put a bowl under it. India's Rural Development and Water and Sanitation Minister Jairam Ramesh has urged single women to give men a toilet ultimatum. Lead-poisoning threshold lowered by the CDC
Almost all children are exposed to lead, which does irreversible damage to the brain.
