Why did you become a journalist?

It was the only thing I ever really wanted to do.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I worked for my hometown newspaper during high school covering the optimistic beat of school sports.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The Feast of the 7 Fish for Edible Manhattan. I got to interview my tough, brave aunt, Marcella Hazan, bust some myths, & reveal some truths.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be persistent but polite. Don't burn bridges. Read your contracts.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

As an editor: "Hey, I have this old story that nobody else wants -- how about you publish it?"

What's your favorite drink?

Sazerac.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Cooking in my kitchen or running in my local park.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York Times.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That testing, tasting through, and writing about spirits and wine isn't work. If you're doing it right, it is.
