Time Bandits is a wildly underrated film
Although Time Bandits (1981) isn’t in the same league as Brazil (1985) and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), it nevertheless demonstrates Terry Gilliam’s inventiveness in the realm of family cinema. It doesn’t hurt that it features two members of Monty Python – John Cleese and Michael Palin, the latter the film’s co-writer – but Gilliam fertile enough in 1981 to create a zany adventure film, regardless of cast, location, or budget.
My New Friends (Les Gens d’à Côté)
QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM BERLIN Isabelle Huppert and André Téchiné are two powerhouses of French cinema. They only worked together once, 45 years ago, in The Brontë Sisters. This means that the expectations are high, at least for this humble film journalist. Unfortunately, when we set the bar so high, the odds of disappointment are equally bis. My New Friends is an unsatusfactory film, with plenty of good intentions, most of them left unfulfilled. Huppert is Lucie, a police forensic expert.
Middle East, Gender Politics in Focus in Berlin Sidebars
The Berlin Film Festival is staying true to its political roots. The 74th Berlinale on Wednesday unveiled its Panorama, Generation and Forum sidebars, and the selection is packed with features and documentaries with a strong political bent, as is to be expected from a fest that prides itself on the social relevance of its official lineup.
Benjamin Voisin: “I fall in love a lot”
A year after winning the César for best hope for his remarkable performance in Illusions perdus, by Xavier Giannoli, Benjamin Voisin, 26, reveals himself through a first role with André Téchiné. In Les Âmes sœurs (1), he plays a lieutenant who became amnesiac after an explosion in Mali. Returning to France, he must start from scratch with the help of his sister (Noémie Merlant), who is both a mother, a nurse and a confidante. His feelings for her are then a little troubled...

Review: In ‘Being 17,’ 2 Boys Teeter Between Animosity and Attraction
To fight or to fall in love: That is the choice two antagonistic high school classmates face in “Being 17,” a touching drama about raging hormones, bullying and sexual awakening — and the strongest film in many years by the post-New Wave French director André Téchiné.
'The Girl on the Train': EW review
What makes a movie adaptation of a book succeed? The quality of the source material matters, of course, but it’s hardly a guarantee; a lot of great novels have curled up and died on screen, and some forgettable or even truly awful ones have been pulled through the weeds.
