Since 1994, few bands have been brave enough to mock Kurt Cobain or Nirvana given the guitarist’s devastating end. Luckily for Sonic Youth, they issued a jab at Cobain in ‘93, at a time when the musician and his band were virile and healthy. Whores Moaning was an obvious pun on Nirvana’s Hormoaning. Like This Is Spinal Tap and the jokes at Led Zeppelin, this gag stemmed from affection and love.

Love & Heartbreak Nettwerk Music ebbs and flows, as MISSIO are only too aware. As a duo, Matthew Brue and David Butler have completed six records together, with Love & Heartbreak being the richest in form and purpose. This project, as an entity, is rich with references to mortality, degradation, and inner turmoil. In terms of it being a sonic experience, Love & Heartbreak is strikingly different from previous MISSIO records;  a visceral rollercoaster burning with energy on all sides.

The Bobby Lees have decided on their latest album to decorate the listener with charming, chiming hooks as opposed to bulldozing them with a series of blindingly, intricate riffs. This makes for an interesting divide, placing equal importance on the words and rhythms heard here. New Self is a credit to the four musicians that comprise the Woodstock, New York-founded group, creating a sonic universe where shrieks and power chords are centered in the mix.
