What does it mean to be a journalist?

It's a privilege and a responsibility to truthfully, thoughtfully, and thoroughly tell the stories of the communities I cover.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

laptop and desktop, iPad Pro, iPhone and Nikon camera gear. Software is browser-based BLOX Total Content Management System.

Why did you become a journalist?

I'm a storyteller and I find real life more fascinating than fiction.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was a reporter and editor.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I've written many stories over the years. I couldn't pick just one. Several long-form features of interesting people, probably.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read newspapers!!!!

When's the best time to pitch you?

mid-morning

What's the best pitch you ever got?

There's no best pitch...I've had nearly 40 years of great story possibilities presented to me.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A man attempting to look like Elvis growled at me, thinking it might entice me to do a story on his new limo service.

What's your favorite drink?

Iced caramel latte

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Out covering a story, at church, or with family and a giant breed dog.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, The Passion version of the Bible.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

People might underestimate the quality and volume of great stories waiting to be told in community journalism.
