I was 36 when my boyfriend proposed. Given I had already fallen in love with his three young children, I don’t think anything could have stopped me from committing. I was ready to trade everything that made my single life look fun on social media—the global travel for work and weekend spa retreats. I was convinced it was far less fulfilling than soccer practice and twilight walks around the pond looking for bugs. All I wanted was the kind of stability that came on a cul-de-sac with a two-car garage.

Take a deep breath and imagine Snapchat doesn’t exist, and the only way to find out who’s having a party tonight is to press *69 on a landline phone and ask someone’s mom. We were built differently back then. I once had a three-hour argument in a mall food court about which actor was in that one movie with the bus, with absolutely no way to resolve it other than unearned confidence.

But the top of my crack, well, it swerves like it’s a freehand drawing done after a third martini. I wasn’t born like this; I had an operation in my 20s to remove a harmful cyst.
