I am a British freelance journalist (often found in Tokyo) who specialises in anime, animation, film and fantasy media. I have written for magazines including SFX, Sight & Sound, Empire and NEO. I also wrote a monthly film column for Judge Dredd Megazine for four years. At present, I collect news for the website Anime News Network and write regularly for Animation World Network. My books include "100 Animated Feature Films" and the "BFI Film Classics" book on the film Spirited Away.

This article is prompted by a recent extended report in Bloomberg Businessweek about Studio Ghibli, the world's most famous anime studio. It was thorough on the studio's current situation, though with little news for Ghibli-watchers. No new feature has been announced by Ghibli since it released the Oscar-winning Boy and the Heron three years ago.

For anyone who needs a reminder, the world's top-grossing animated feature film as of writing isn't Zootopia 2 or Inside Out 2 (in second and third places respectively). It's last year's Chinese epic Ne Zha 2, which earned more than two billion dollars. I covered it in May last year. (Yes, I'm an anime columnist, but I cover anime-adjacent things too.) Now there's another Chinese CG epic, All Wishes Come True!, which has made more than $235 million domestically since July.

Star Wars Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi (Disney+/ Hulu) Among anime, this spinoff from a spinoff got most attention last week (its eight episodes all dropped last Wednesday), with much of that attention coming from outside anime fandom. In such ways it's an important series, but it's the least interesting of the three anime I'm covering this time. It's spun off from the anthology series Star Wars: Visions, which involved multiple anime studios (I reviewed Season 3 last year).
