A Bright Outlook Ahead for Print Providers
This is no ordinary time for commercial printing. Extreme uncertainty created by no-one-knows-what’s-next tariff policies has dampened sales, inflated operating costs, and squeezed profit margins across the industry. Meanwhile, transformative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things, and smart robotics redefine what’s possible and widen the gap between top performers and everyone else.

How to Turn the Tariff Uncertainty Into an Opportunity
In a recent episode of the "What's Trending Now?" series, Andy Paparozzi, chief economist at PRINTING United Alliance, shares how the recent tariffs are affecting the industry and how printers are responding; and how PSPs can view the uncertainty as an opportunity, rather than a threat.
The Effects of Tariffs on the Printing Industry
More than 90.0% of the participants in the PRINTING United Alliance Effects of Tariffs on the Printing Industry Survey expect the recent increases in tariffs to affect their business. There are strong opinions on both the positive side – “It’s about time we took care of our country and our people” – and the negative side – “Tariffs do not help anyone!!!” –as well as broad agreement that it is too early to know what the long-term effects will be for either our industry or the American economy.

In the packaging segment of the printing industry, efficiency is everything. With lead times shrinking and brand owners demanding faster turnarounds, printers and converters have had to assess and implement technological innovations that can increase their pace of production. While advancements in digital printing and automation have moved the industry in the right direction, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as the next key driver of efficient label and packaging production.

Top opportunities will include strengthening risk management and drawing on artificial intelligence (AI) to maximize productivity, enhance mission-critical functions, and support superior decision-making companywide.

Adversity Can Create Opportunity for Printers in 2023

The Question: Are Business and Consumer Behavior Changes Temporary or Permanent?
The COVID crisis has changed business and consumer behavior in many ways. But which of the changes are temporary and which are permanent? Which can we ride for a while before they peter out and which must we build into our long-range business plans? Answering correctly is essential to participating in the recovery ahead. Recovery is ahead, although the rough patch we’ve hit suggests otherwise.

Commercial Printing Outlook: Preparing for the Upturn
The commercial printing industry will grow in 2021. Growth will begin during the second quarter, and accelerate through year end. No company, however, should count on the upturn or the shakeout of weak competitors to make everything right. Much will be different in the post-COVID world. And much of the gains ahead will be reserved for companies already thinking about those differences, and how to make them opportunities rather than threats.
Preparing for Recovery
Expect the printing industry to grow in 2021, boosted by a sharp upturn in the American economy. There are still too many unknowns to forecast by how much. We can be sure, however, that the upcoming recovery will be very selective, giving some companies a lift, while shutting others out. Key to making the cut: Excel at analyzing and acting on market trends and begin preparing for the post-COVID world now.
The Printing Industry Takes First Steps Toward Recovery
Key printing industry business indicators are showing improvement, according to a recent NAPCO Research/PRINTING United Alliance survey. From early May through early June, our industry took that step. The survey is part of our COVID-19 Print Business Indicators Research program.

That’s generating a lot of talk about a quick and sustained (V-shaped) recovery, beginning as early as this summer.

Business Indicators Demonstrate Impact of COVID-19 on Package Printers and Converters
As large portions of the U.S. economy remain shuttered as a result of COVID-19, businesses across every industry have been tested in unprecedented ways, in many cases resulting in depressed sales and profitability. Package printers and converters have certainly faced issues of their own, but they have not been hit as hard as other segments because many serve industries such as packaged food, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, which have shown growth over the past few weeks.
Not Just Stimulus - Aid
On March 27 Trump signed into law a $2 trillion fiscal stimulus package. Named the largest emergency aid package in U.S. history, the package does more than boost spending and hiring: It provides immediate income support — whether stimulative or not — to the tens of millions who can’t get back to work because it isn’t biologically safe to be around their coworkers.
