Experimental demonstration of an approach to designing a metal-dielectric DBR resonant cavity structure
In this paper, we present and experimentally validate a mathematical design methodology for designing DBR resonant cavities with highly complex-index layers at the center. In a conventional DBR resonant cavity, the central layer is designed to be a quarter-wave thick to ensure resonance. Clearly, the concept of a quarter-wave thickness of Au, or any other highly complex film, is not meaningful.
Performance Analysis of Six Electro-Optical Crystals in a High-Bandwidth Traveling Wave Mach-Zehnder Light Modulator
1. Introduction A traveling wave Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator (TW-MZM) offers high-bandwidth modulation [1]. It operates based on the electro-optic (EO) effect, enabling light intensity modulation at the output by adjusting the applied voltage to control the imposed external electric field. This modulator consists of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two arms through which the light signal travels, and there is a modulator section integrated into one of the arms [2].

Continuously variable Fourier filters fabricated using varying angle glancing angle deposition for chip-scale spectroscopy
Low-cost spectroscopy has received a great deal of attention in recent years in applications such as food inspection, disease detection, and manufacturing. Current spectroscopic systems rely on multiple optical components, making them mechanically fragile systems. In our previous work, we demonstrated the use of Fourier filtering using thin dielectric films. The sampling effect from the cavity resonances can be used to decompose a signal into its Fourier components.
Switchable distributed Bragg reflector using GST phase change material
Abstract We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and measurement of a switchable distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) that can be thermally switched from a close-to-zero reflective OFF state to a more than 70% reflection in its ON state. This is accomplished using a multilayer thin film stack using germanium (Ge) and the phase change material (PCM) Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST). The refractive indexes of Ge and GST in the amorphous state are closely matched, resulting in a nearly zero interface reflection.
