"Hey Rev” was my friendly greeting, followed by a nod and a fist bump, over the many years I covered the Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson as a political reporter at WLS-TV/ABC-7. It’s one of my many old but still vivid memories of media days with Jackson, who died Tuesday of complications from Parkinson’s disease and a neurological disorder at the age of 84.

There was a promising moment a few years ago when reform-minded “goo-goos” — I proudly admit to having been one of them — actually thought Illinois and other states might get serious about ending the cynical cartographic gerrymandering contortions that have polluted our politics for decades. Good government advocates from coast to coast—nonprofits, civic groups, editorial boards and even a few well-meaning politicians—were rallying behind independent redistricting commissions.
