Recent genome reduction of Wolbachia in Drosophila recens targets phage WO and narrows candidates for reproductive parasitism

Genome analysis revealed that wMel and wRec are very closely related with an average of 99.7% nucleotide identity in coding regions shared by the two strains. We estimate that wRec and wMel diverged around 350,000 years ago. This estimate raises an interesting biogeographical question: how could Wolbachia have been transferred at this time between the widely allopatric Nearctic D. recens and Afrotropical D. melanogaster?
