Lethality and Testosterone Will Get Us Only So Far
Enemy drones over Romania. Wayward missiles in Poland. Sabotage in Germany. Every week brings some new Russian provocation as President Vladimir Putin steps up his efforts to divide Europe and undermine support for Ukraine. As Western militaries scramble to respond, the prospect of the war spilling over into NATO territory rises. The problem of escalating instability, unfortunately, is not confined to Europe’s eastern frontier.

ICYMI: Senator King and Mark Hertling Warn America’s Military Posture Is Putting Global Stability at Risk
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In an opinion piece published in the New York Times today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) joined retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General and former Commander of the U.S. Army in Europe, Mark Hertling, arguing the White House and Pentagon are putting global stability at risk.
The Danger of a Political Pentagon Original
For almost 14 years, a big part of my job on the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) has been listening to and questioning generals and admirals about every aspect of the military, from weapons development to the state of the DIB (that’s Pentagon-speak for Defense Industrial Base), and everything in between.

The Voter Fraud Fraud
There just isn’t evidence of significant election cheating—but that won’t stop the GOP from pushing its dangerous SAVE America Act. DURING HIS STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS on February 24, President Donald Trump asked Congress to “stop illegal aliens and others who are unpermitted persons from voting in our sacred American elections. The cheating is rampant in our elections. It’s rampant.” The accusation that there is rampant cheating in our election is dramatic, alarming, and oft-repeated.

America's national parks are at a crossroads. Here's how Congress can protect them Original
Video NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! From Acadia’s rocky Atlantic coastline to Glacier’s snowcapped valleys, our national parks are America’s crown jewels, admired at home and abroad. Our parks represent more than natural beauty, however. They embody our history, our freedoms and our future. It's our responsibility to ensure they remain a critical part of these shared values.

Senator King’s Declaration of Conscience on Trump’s 100th day in office
Almost 75 years ago, the junior Republican Senator from Maine, Margaret Chase Smith, delivered a speech from her heart about a crisis then facing our country: a crisis not arising from a foreign adversary, but from within. A crisis that threatened the values and ideals at the base of the American democratic experiment. Her ‘Declaration of Conscience’ turned out to be one of the most important speeches of the Twentieth Century and defined Smith as a person of extraordinary courage and principle.

250 Years Later, We Need Paul Revere Again
Two hundred and fifty years ago today, American silversmith Paul Revere embarked on his historic ride, dashing on horseback from Boston to Lexington, Mass.—all along the way alerting the colonists and the Minutemen militia of the imminent attack upon our fledgling nation by the British Army.

Law Personal Statement
Would it be a good idea to theme my personal statement around a question at the start? I’m quite interested in law at its most basic level (where it comes from and whatnot) so could I start it off by asking “where does law come from?” And then using all my super curriculars surrounding that specific topic (books, courses, articles, etc) make a good personal statement. I would probably take it from a few different angles (Legislature,Judicial,Constitutional, international and natural/ethical).

Why America Can't Give Up on Ukraine
Ideas February 2, 2024 10:12 AM EST Senator Angus King is the junior senator from Maine I recently read a book by the great historian William Shirer, a book about the Third French republic, it was between World War I and World War II. One of the most haunting parts of that book was about the failure of the European allies, particularly France and Great Britain to face Hitler when stopping him would have been relatively easy.
Helping older Maine people ‘Stand Strong’ in their golden years
We all know the saying: ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ Well, I’ve heard of too many older Maine people who have suffered from a household fall and then faced months of costly hospital visits and doctor’s bills. So, in an effort to help older Maine people ‘Stand Strong’ throughout their golden years – while also saving theirs and taxpayers’ dollars – I am working to provide Maine adults with cost-effective prevention measures and resources.

What Congress Must Do Now to Speed Up the Green Energy Transition
The most recent United Nations IPCC Report found that the world must cut emissions by 60% by 2035 to limit the planet’s rise in temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The solutions exist, but we are running out of time. We need to act big, and we need to act fast. In the past two years, President Biden and Congress have responded. We passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act to support our transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Prevent the Mistakes of History by Passing 2023 NDAA
I sometimes get asked: “Why is America spending so much to help Ukraine?” My response is to Google “Rhineland, 1936″ or “Sudetenland, 1938.” Those were places where Adolph Hitler started his war across Europe, and where any level of resistance could have stopped his bloody march — and might well have saved the over 50 million lives lost in World War II. What Sustainable Seafood Activists Get Wrong About Maine's Lobsters
Maine. When you hear the word, images immediately come to mind. Gorgeous coastlines, expansive mountains, untouched forests—all living up to the state’s motto of “the way life should be.” But I’ll bet most of you also think: lobsters. And rightfully so. Unfortunately, Maine’s lobster industry—and the thousands of people and small businesses who rely on it along our state’s coastline—find themselves in immediate peril.

The Right to Vote Is More Important Than the Filibuster
When I was Governor of Maine, I used to have a standing bet with my fellow Independent Governor, Jesse Ventura of Minnesota, about which of our states would have higher voter turnout. As we saw it, that was what our system is all about— the more engagement we drove in our democratic process, the more effectively our government could recognize and respond to the challenges facing our citizens. It seems that mindset has shifted over the last few decades.

Let's Not Rush to Judgment About the Withdrawal From Afghanistan
As I listen to the commentators discuss the current situation in Afghanistan, the central question does not seem to be whether we should leave the country, but why it happened so fast and chaotically. The situation is being described as a catastrophe, a disaster or an American failure.
Let's Not Rush to Judgment About the Withdrawal From Afghanistan
U.S. Withdrawal Leaves Afghanistan in Crisis and Uncertainty Refugees from Afghanistan walk through Washington Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Virginia, U.S., on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021. The departure of the last U.S. military plane from Afghanistan left the region facing uncertainty, with the Taliban seeking to cement control of a nation shattered by two decades of war and an economy long dependent on foreign aid and opium sales.

A Radical Idea to Address the Deficit: Enforce Tax Laws
As I write this, the national debt sits above $28 trillion, and rises rapidly by the minute; each passing day increases the burden we leave for our children and grandchildren. It’s clear that action is needed, but bipartisan consensus has been hard to find. When politicians discuss the national debt, the conversation usually centers on raising taxes or cutting spending. Sounds easy, but deciding which taxes and what spending is the hard part, and while we’re debating, the debt keeps going up.
Opinion | Angus King: What happens to the filibuster depends on how Republicans play their hand
Angus S. King Jr., an independent, represents Maine in the U.S. Senate. I first came to the Senate eight years ago, at the beginning of President Barack Obama’s second term and when the Democrats were in the majority. At that time, I was anxious to reform or even eliminate the filibuster, the process whereby major legislation requires 60 votes rather than a simple majority to proceed toward passage. “It’s minority rule,” I said.
