When it comes to all-time great zombie movies, George A. Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead is right up there among the best. The film revolves around four survivors from a zombie apocalypse in America barricading themselves into a deserted shopping mall to escape the unfolding horror outside. These days Hull’s Princes Quay shopping centre might not be under siege from flesh-eating zombies but it’s not exactly full of customers either.

Like all great places of arrival and departure, there’s a sense of drama about Hull’s Victoria Pier. Jutting out into the Humber, it’s been a feature on the city’s waterfront in one shape or another for just over two centuries. Now, having been closed to the public on safety grounds for the last four years, we’re about to get a new one as demolition of the existing structure has apparently been approved by Hull City Council.
