From Swaraj to ward committees: Can India bring democracy closer to citizens?
When a drain overflows, or a street-light stops working, or garbage piles up, each problem can appear small on its own. But problems aggregate, frustrations accumulate, and eventually, they spill onto the streets. In Chennai, around a quarter of the city’s daily civic complaints now come through social media, rising sharply during floods. In Bengaluru, residents have repeatedly protested over flooding, encroachment, and tree cutting.

Audit shows loose finances, violations of state law at New College
New College of Florida overpaid faculty and administrators, accidentally paid vendors more than once and failed to collect more than $160,000 in student payments, according to a state report chronicling the school’s recent financial activities in recent years. The practices were among several negative findings — including violations of state law — in the state auditor general’s most recent operational audit of the university.

Changing the narrative for better health
At the core of narrative medicine lies the patient-physician relationship. When a patient walks into a doctor’s office, it’s not just a routine check-up — it’s the start of a conversation filled with stories. Patients bring their narratives — their life experiences, their fears, and their hopes. Doctors, in turn, are not just there to listen passively but to engage empathetically with these stories. Think of it as reading a gripping novel.
Can the Supreme Court restore Manipur to sanity and order?
Both tribal citizens and the Meiteis in Manipur hope the Supreme Court will intervene on Wednesday to help restore order and initiate a dialogue, a tall order given the trust deficit Hecha Thadou (not his real name) says his family members back in Manipur were lucky to survive the ‘communal rioting’ that raged in Manipur since May 3. Like several other Kuki tribespeople from Manipur residing and working outside the state, he too believes the riots were planned in advance.
Personalized approaches for treatment-naïve mantle cell lymphoma
ABSTRACT Introduction Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) can have diverse disease presentations, which vary in aggressiveness and prognosis, and can occur in patients with varying ability to tolerate therapy. Additionally, the options for treatment of MCL have expanded rapidly in the last decade, translating to improved outcome for patients.
U.S. changing politics
It would have been unimaginable even a couple of years ago. The most powerful Republican in Washington flew to San Diego in October to help raise money for an openly gay candidate for the House of Representatives. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, wasn't just trying to help elect a Republican. He was trying to help his party build a new image, and reach out to voters it had spent the last decade shunning.
Biden likely to nominate new ATF head after first one pulled

Abortion fight adds to Biden’s growing policy backlog
President Joe Biden wants to marshal the full power of the federal government to fight back against a ban on most abortions in Texas. | Susan Walsh/AP Photo Joe Biden wants to marshal the full power of the federal government to fight back against a ban on most abortions in Texas. But the president’s efforts may end the same way as so many other elements of his ambitious agenda: with success proving elusive .
Abortion fight adds to Biden's growing policy backlog
Texas’ abortion law adds to the growing number of issues Biden is being pushed to prioritize, including reforming police departments, rewriting immigraton laws and raising the federal minimum wage. They’re all issues he promised to tackle with speed. And it’s raising the pressure on him to support a fundamental restructuring of the other two branches of government, including eliminating the Senate filibuster and expanding the Supreme Court.
Biden mulls ‘lite’ version of Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy
The possibility of resuming Migrant Protection Protocols or MPP — one of former President Donald Trump’s most contentious immigration policies — even while trying to soften it, has angered advocates who expected Biden to offer a more welcoming system for migrants. “One of his campaign promises was to end MPP. He did that. He should stand by that,” said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of National Immigration Law Center.
As Biden winds down Afghanistan, a refugee backlash looms at home
“We have to make sure that the people that enter into our country want to support our country, not want to attack our country,” Rosendale said in an interview. He said he plans to urge fellow Republican Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte to reject refugees housed in his state without proof of vetting. U.S. president Donald Trump (L) looks on as republican candidates for U.S. Senate Matt Rosendale (R) speaks during a campaign rally at Four Seasons Arena on July 5, 2018 in Great Falls, Montana.
Activists urge Biden to bypass Congress and create office on gun violence Original
Against the backdrop of David Chipman’s nomination to lead ATF languishing in the Senate, the groups asked Biden to establish a White House office to be led by an aide who does not need Senate confirmation, similar to Biden’s White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy. They also called on Biden to use his political capital to urge lawmakers to pass gun laws and the bully pulpit to sell Americans on reforms.

Kelly is on trial (yes, again); the Pfizer vaxx is FDA approved; and much of Tennessee is underwater.
Biden railed against Trump’s immigration policies, now defends them in courts
They point to the fact that, in some cases, Biden’s team has argued policies created under Trump’s acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf were legal, even after a federal judge concluded Wolf did not lawfully serve in the position since he was never confirmed by the Senate. Their reasoning: opposing Wolf’s immigration policies could have impacted all sorts of changes at the sprawling department, which deals with everything from disaster relief to airline travel.
Biden’s vision for the border has gone bust. But what’s Plan B?
As the administration, local officials, border agents and nonprofit leaders grapple with the day-to-day logistical challenges of apprehending and processing or expelling thousands of migrants, U.S. officials and immigration experts say they have theories but no concrete explanations for why the increase is happening now.
Gun safety groups to Biden: Do more to get your point man confirmed
"The White House has really dropped the ball here and if Chipman is not confirmed that will be a significant letdown to survivors of gun violence across the country — and will have the effect of undermining their effort to reduce gun homicides,” said Igor Volsky, executive director of the advocacy group Guns Down America. “Biden told us during the campaign trail that this is a priority and the administration insists that he is in charge of driving this issue.

White House not planning to lift Covid border restrictions this month
The administration could still change its stance in response to a lawsuit. It is in negotiations with the ACLU, which accuses Biden of using the policy to restrict immigration as it challenges the legality of the U.S. using Title 42 to expel families. The ACLU must tell the court Monday whether it intends to continue negotiating, as it has for months, with the administration or resume its litigation, said Lee Gelernt, the lead lawyer in the ACLU's case.
Biden team weighs return to mask mandates in some states
POLITICO 5 mins ago By Erin Banco, Adam Cancryn and Anita Kumar Top Biden administration officials are weighing whether to recommend that states and communities with low vaccination rates reimpose mask mandates, particularly indoors, as part of discussions on how the administration can do more to slow the spread of the Delta variant.

‘Normal is not good enough’: After Trump, pressure’s on Biden to create new ethics rules
Having campaigned on bringing ethical behavior back to the Oval Office, Biden made quick strides on that front. He established strong ethics rules for his own aides, banning them from receiving compensation from their previous employers, prohibiting them from lobbying the White House if they leave theiradministration jobs during Biden’s term and restricting gifts from lobbyists. But executive actions only last as long as the president in office is willing to live by them.
‘Normal is not good enough’: After Trump, pressure’s on Biden to create new ethics rules
When it comes to ethics in the White House, President Joe Biden is no Donald Trump. But for a growing number of Democratic lawmakers and government watchdog groups, that’s too meager. Six months into office, they’re pushing the president to follow through on his campaign promise to press for an aggressive 25-point plan for ethics reform, fearful that the window to do so may be closing — and with it an opportunity to prevent the lapses of the Trump years from happening again.
Biden takes calculated political risk on Afghanistan withdrawal
Biden’s now-it’s-my-turn-moment — in the form of an announcement Thursday that troops would leave Afghanistan by Aug. 3 — was met with resignation from a large swath of the foreign policy community that has come to believe that withdrawal was, in the end, a defensible decision even if the ripple effects are unknown. “The whole landscape has changed,” said Brian Katulis, who worked in the Clinton administration and is now a senior fellow at the left-leaning Center for American Progress.
Biden allies brace for GOP attacks when southern border reopens
Even with the phased-in approach, a sharp increase in migrants poses a major challenge for the administration over how to handle their arrival — hold them in detention centers or release them as they await their court proceedings, which can take years given a long backlog of cases.
Harris looks to shift the narrative at the southern border
The Biden administration is insisting that Vice President Kamala Harris’ trip to the U.S.-Mexico border today is not about politics. But the politics of immigration are unavoidable as Harris tours a U.S. Customs Border Patrol central processing facility, receives a briefing and meets with immigration advocates in El Paso, Texas.
Harris looks to shift the narrative at the southern border
The GOP gleefully labeled Harris the “border czar” after President Joe Biden tasked her with finding solutions to the crises in Central America driving migrants to attempt to seek refuge in the United States. Aides continued to press for months that Harris wasn’t focused on the border but rather the root causes of migration, and insisted she wouldn’t go there just for a photo-op. They also said Harris would be visiting the border at some point, but on their own terms.

POLITICO 19 mins ago By Anita Kumar and Myah Ward BRUSSELS - Two days before he talks to Russia's leader, President Joe Biden on Monday sought to tamp down expectations of the long-anticipated meeting by acknowledging that Vladimir Putin is a "worthy adversary." The queen meets her 13th U.S. president: Joe from Scranton
It’s a presidential rite of passage. Queen Elizabeth, 95, has met every American president since World War II, with the exception of Lyndon Johnson. Biden is the first in two decades, though, to come from what he’s described as hardscrabble roots. “It's a mighty long ride from being Scranton Joe the Amtrak commuter to dining... with Queen Elizabeth but they'll get along fabulously,” presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said.

POLITICO 28 mins ago By Anita Kumar, Stuart Lau and David M. Herszenhorn PLYMOUTH, England - The Group of Seven wealthy democracies tussled Saturday over how explicitly to admonish China over human rights in an upcoming joint declaration. Biden flourishes in Trump’s absence from the world stage
So many leaders at the latest G-7 meeting, including those from Germany, France and Canada, seemed simply eager to move past Trump this week; so much so that they greeted Biden like an old friend even when he wasn’t. As the world leaders walked along St. Ives Bay just before the summit began, French President Emmanuel Macron, who had never met Biden before, put his arm around him and the two walked arm and arm.

Biden’s foreign policy: Reverse the Trump agenda but hit one similar note
Think of it as a more global-minded, multilateralist take on America First. It’s not a completely new concept for Biden. But it’s made all the more critical as he continues to push for trillions of dollars in spending and tries to maintain his grip on the portion of working-class voters who helped him win in 2020.
Neera Tanden is back. Could she be more powerful?
POLITICO 8 mins ago By Natasha Korecki and Anita Kumar When Neera Tanden assumed a role as senior adviser at the White House last week, after her bid for a Cabinet post went off the rails, it was viewed as a consolation prize. In reality, Tanden may have just stepped into a more quietly powerful position: entering President Joe Biden's inner sanctum and avoiding the scrutiny from her detractors that would have come with a more public-facing role.
