Extracellular traps from myeloid cells as therapeutic targets in traumatic heterotopic ossification
Editor’s summary Musculoskeletal injuries, including tendon and ligament trauma, can lead to ectopic bone formation near the site of injury, and there are few effective treatments available to prevent this traumatic heterotopic ossification (HO). Here, Jiang et al. found that myeloid cells deposit extracellular traps (ETs) at sites of HO in humans and mice. Using genetic loss-of-function and gain-of-function studies in mice, the authors show that ETs are associated with HO severity.
Arthroscopic Shaver-based Harvest of Minced Cartilage Results in Reduced Chondrocyte Viability and Reduced Quality of Cartilaginous Repair Tissue Compared With Open Harvest and Conventional Fragmentation
Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) may be considered an established gold standard therapy for chondral repair.1-3 Compared with bone marrow–stimulating (BMS) techniques, ACI provides greater-quality hyaline-like cartilage in the regenerative cartilage tissue (ReCT), which is associated with a better functional outcome and lower reoperation rates in mid- to long-term follow-up.4-9 However, ACI is a 2-stage surgical procedure that requires considerable infrastructure to perform.10...
