American Crystal Sugar Co., the U.S’s largest sugarbeet company, was still slicing its 2025 crop at the end of May. The Moorhead, Minnesota, factory district finished slicing sugarbeets on May 20, 2026, and Crookston, Minnesota and East Grand Forks, Minnesota, factory districts were scheduled to finish the weekend of May 29.

The topsoil that blackened the skies across North Dakota, Minnesota and eastern Montana during gale-force winds in mid-May 2026 carried with it nutrients that will take centuries to replace. That means it is imperative that farmers adopt methods such as no-till that will stabilize it, soil experts say. If topsoil continues to blow, successive farming between generations will discontinue, said Naeem Kalwar, soil health specialist at North Dakota State University Langdon Research Extension Center.

2026 sugarbeet planting marked by difficult weather conditions

Despite the poor spring conditions, most of the 2026 sugarbeet crop that got into the ground was in excellent to average condition at the end of May, sugarbeet company leaders said.
