1 Introduction Epigenetics is a broad term that encompasses several different cellular mechanisms that alter gene expression independently of the DNA sequence. Epigenetic regulation of gene expression facilitated the evolution of multicellular organisms, enabling a dynamic control of cellular processes and differentiation necessary for diverse tissue formation and complexity (1). Epigenetic processes include DNA methylation, histone modifications, and chromatin remodeling.
