Previews: ASSASSINS at Out Of The Box At Center Stage
Out of the Box Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins” opens at Center Stage this Friday night. Expect a rogue’s gallery of America’s presidential assassins (and try-hard assassins) who feel no remorse whatsoever for their crimes. And, in a way that only Stephen Sondheim’s musicals can finesse, it’s a comedy. It also shows the continuity and change of political violence in America.
Preview: 'IT ENDS WITH GUINEA PIGS' at The Elysian
“It Ends With Guinea Pigs” opens this weekend in the Elysian’s intimate 40-seat Vault space. Playwright-performer Diana Gitelman takes the audience on a path that begins with a minor parenting problem, the care and feeding of two high‑maintenance guinea pigs, and then winds its way through grief, ancestral trauma, and transformation. The French philosopher Roland Barthes described how a detail of a family photo can have a wounding effect on a viewer who knew the subject.
Preview: JAGGED LITTLE PILL at Center Stage
It is now thirty years since Alanis Morissette released her album Jagged Little Pill, and its stage incarnation is set to arrive in Santa Barbara with a fresh staging. Academy Award-winning writer Cody Diablo extends the angst-filled textures of Morissette’s songs. Out of the Box founder Samantha Eve was in the midst of directing the show when she spoke with me about the challenges of staging a Broadway show in the dimensions of Center Stage’s more intimate setting.

Review: 'SONGS FOR NOBODIES' at PCPA: Solvang Festival Theater
The names of the divas—Garland, Piaf, Cline, Holiday, Callas—sparkle like the dangling lights on Solvang’s Theaterfest stage. But PCPA’s production of “Songs for Nobodies” gives equal voice and light to the stories of its titular “nobodies.” The constellation of all these characters revolves around actor-vocalist Bethany Thomas, its sole performer. The evening's stories move in a tidy rhythm: a sharply drawn vignette from an ordinary woman, then a song that encapsulates her needs and dreams.
A Merry Madness: A review of PCPA’s SOMETHING ROTTEN!
Many years ago, a TV commercial imagined how Reese’s peanut butter cups were invented. A handsome man with peanut butter crashes into a beautiful woman with chocolate: “You got your chocolate in my peanut butter!” “You got your peanut butter in my chocolate!” "Something Rotten!," now playing at the Solvang Festival Theater by PCPA, imagines a similarly absurd collision between Shakespeare and the American musical. Two great tastes that, it turns out, taste very silly together.
Review: HOLMES AND WATSON at PCPA: Solvang Festival Theater
With a crack of thunder and a flash of lightning, “Holmes and Watson” begins. The new PCPA production on Solvang’s outdoor stage offers twisty delights to hardcore Sherlock fans and regular theater goers alike. At the top of the play, we find Dr. John Watson (Don Stewart) in the midst of a once grand great hall on a Scottish estate. Dr. Evans (Mark Booher) explains that he has transformed the manor into an asylum for the insane and he needs Dr. Watson’s help with a few curious cases.
All Eyes in the Sky as Out-of-the-Box Launches NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812
Out-of-the-Box Theatre Santa Barbara audiences with its upcoming production of “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812,” a vibrant and immersive musical that breathes contemporary energy into a classic tale. Inspired by an episode in the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, the show blends electro-pop, folk rock, and Russian-inspired melodies to create a theatrical experience unlike any other.
Review: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at PCPA: Marian Theater
PCPA’s “Much Ado About Nothing” is a briskly paced, clearly rendered vision of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, chock full of ingenuity and wit. The show brings the audience into its setting--the serene Sicilian village of Messina after the Second World War. There, Don Pedro (Cordell Cole), his soldiers, and courtiers, bright with victory, arrive at the estate of Signior Leonato (Don Stewart) for an extended stay.

Review: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at PCPA: Marian Theater
A Fairy Tale ‘As Old As Time’ for The Holidays From now until December 22, the Marian Theater will remain dotted with the bright yellow dresses of little ones dressed as “Belle.” At Sunday’s matinee, they watched with eyes as large as saucers. The lively production delivers more charm than the animated film ever could. Generations of audiences have been attending this “tale as old as time,” the story of a beautiful maiden captured by a beast with whom she eventually falls in love.

Feature: ALICE BY HEART at Out Of The Box Theatre at Center Stage
German bombs blast outside a London Underground station. Underneath, a group of strangers have taken shelter. Huddled among them, a young girl named Alice Spencer escapes the clamorous reality of war by entering the magical world of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland. Out of the Box’s newest musical production, “Alice by Heart,” transports the audience along into a rabbit hole of fantasy in a modern retelling of “Alice in Wonderland” set during the London Blitz.
Review: THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT At Rubicon Theatre Company
“The Lifespan of A Fact,” now playing at the Rubicon Theatre Company in Ventura, is a gem of a production. The characters all have the noblest of motives–to tell a compelling story faithfully. They have conflicting values about what the truth means. Therein lies the drama.
Review: THE THANKSGIVING PLAY at ETC
“The Thanksgiving Play,” now playing at ETC, takes a comic look at four grown-ups who tie themselves in knots crafting a Thanksgiving play for an elementary school. Theater teacher Logan (Devin Sidell) has secured a number of cultural grants from funders who want to see indigenous people and hear their perspectives. Everyone earnestly wants to decolonize Thanksgiving. This earnestness is the object of the play's satire.
Review: NUNSENSE At SLO Repertory Theatre
"Nunsense," now playing at SLO Rep, delivers an evening of heavenly harmonies and gentle comedy to tempt even novice theater-goers. Prayer candles adorn the cabaret tables of SLO Rep's lobby, casting a heavenly glow, and inviting the audience into this fun-filled production. The cast of five nuns stand nearby, clad in their habits, eagerly ushering everyone in and handing out “hymnals” (show programs).
Review: EMMA at Marian Theater
Emma (Emily Trask) enters the stage as a confectionary vision in a cheery yellow gown embellished at the waist with a dainty red velvet bow. Her costume, like the play, offers a rosy romance framing a bright, sunny comedy; these warm hues set the tone for PCPA's production of Jane Austen's literary masterwork, Emma. Audiences who have previously met Emma on stage, page, or screen will find seeing Joseph Hanreddy's adaptation like paying a call on an old friend.
Previews: THE DROWSY CHAPERONE at Marjorie Luke
The chaperone has hit the bottle pretty hard and is "napping." The young lady she's meant to watch over has cold (or are they itchy?) feet about her impending nuptials. What could go wrong? Everything--in the most musical and zany way possible, of course. The screwball Broadway hit, The Drowsy Chaperone opens at the Marjorie Luke's stage this weekend.
Feature: THE REALISTIC JONESES at Rubicon Theatre Company
In an unnamed mountain town, two neighboring couples share the last name, "Jones." As they become better acquainted with one another, they discover further commonalities, both comic and poignant. This production of The Realistic Joneses recently performed at the Dublin Theatre Festival with the same cast (Faline England, Sorcha Fox, Conor Lovett, and Joe Spano) and director, Judy Hegarty-Lovett.
Review: CINDERELLA at PCPA's Marian Theater
The holidays certainly call for a trip to the theater and PCPA's production of Cinderella meets that call. Audiences will enjoy the familiar, and cozy story of the neglected, kind, hard-working girl who transcends her oppressive surroundings.
Feature: MISS YOU LIKE HELL at Out Of The Box Theatre At Center Stage
A Musical Road Trip: Miss You Like Hell Out of the Box Theater Company hopes to take audiences on a journey across the United States with its new musical production, Miss You Like Hell. Brimming with contemporary relevance, this musical drama follows a Latinx mother-daughter duo as they drive across the United States, encountering a panoply of characters from all walks of American life.
Review: INTO THE WOODS at PCPA
PCPA ventured "Into the Woods" on Saturday night to open its run of Stephen Sondheim's musical. There's fun to be found in following well-known fairy tale characters such as Little Red Riding Hood (Ekatrina Bouras), Rapunzel (Elizabeth Martinié), and Cinderella (Gracie Jurczy) lose themselves in the woods. Our familiarity with the stories allows Into the Woods to enlarge, send up, fracture, and interweave their storylines--all in the service of an engaging evening of musical theater.

BWW Review: THE LITTLE MERMAID at Marian Theatre, PCPA
by Anna Jensen BroadwayWorld.com Nov. 17, 2019 Katie Emerson as Ariel Luis Escobar Reflections Photography Studioaption "Under the Sea" PCPA tells the story of a little mermaid who longs to join the human world with a novel approach that incorporates acrobatics and trapeze art to animate the undersea world of wonder. BWW Review: LOVE at Center Stage Theater
by Anna Jensen BroadwayWorld.com Oct. 3, 2019 Love: The Variable We Cannot Factor Out Just today, famed opera singer Plácido Domingo resigned from LA Opera amid accusations that he sexually harassed workers there. It seems as though such stories are far more common than they were a few years ago. In October 2017, journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey broke the stories of women sexually assaulted and harassed by the movie producer, Harvey Weinstein.
BWW Review: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST at Solvang Festival Theatre
by Anna Jensen BroadwayWorld.com Sep. 5, 2019 Kitty Balay as Lady Bracknell Luis Escobar Reflections Photography Studio PCPA closes its season with one of the sharpest, funniest, cleverest comedies written in the English language--Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. Fans of this Victorian confection of drawing-room comedy will not be disappointed.
Motor independence: what's in it for you?
Motor efficiency is all the rage — these days, plant operators and OEMs routinely specify their electric motor installations according to European or other regional efficiency ratings. In Europe, the IE classification gives an indication of the energy efficiency of the motor and the motor controller (also known as AC drive, variable speed drive or frequency converter) respectively, and the IES rating defines the efficiency of the entire system of motor and motor controller combined.

Before the first line of PCPA's The Addams Family had left the mouth of Gomez Addams (George Walker), my seatmate was already chuckling. And the laughs kept coming until the players took their bows to a standing audience. The cast's comic timing synchronized perfectly with Erik Stein's fluid staging for a frightfully fun evening.

BWW Review: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE at Marian Theatre, Santa Maria
by Anna Jensen BroadwayWorld.com Feb. 12, 2019 PCPA's current production, Shakespeare in Love, imagines Will Shakespeare's (Yusef Seevers) madcap adventures in London early in his career. Because historians truly do not know much about the personal life of the greatest writer of the English language, his life is a blank page upon which almost anything may be written. In this play, Shakespeare falls in love (at first sight) with Viola de Lesseps (Emily Trask).
