What we know: Fire broke out at the Viva Energy facility in Corio at 11pm on Wednesday and raged until 12pm on Thursday when Fire Rescue Victoria successfully brought the blaze under control (The Guardian).

Israel and Lebanon agree to ceasefire

By Anna Stewart • April 17, 2026 US President Donald Trump has confirmed that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire set to begin at 7am AEST Friday. What we know: After speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Trump said on social media, “These two leaders have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a 10-day CEASEFIRE” (The Age).

NSW anti-protest laws struck down

The legislation, passed in an emergency sitting of parliament in December 2025, sought to prevent authorised public assemblies in parts of Sydney for almost two months (ABC).
