Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I worked as literary editor at my college magazine.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
We had a very in my house when I was growing up. My parents never get rid of anything.
How is social media changing news?
It's certainly making it quicker to find sources, but also easy to disseminate more misinformation. Gotta be careful.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Walter Burns in His Girl Friday. He's such a scumbag, I love it.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Gosh. I guess to be a sponge. I'd rather over-interview and over-research than lowball it and write a thin story.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Oh god it was something Bieber related. I'll think of it later.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Over the phone! E-mail works too but sometimes the phone is easier.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro X, Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, pen and paper, Zoom h1 handy recorder, gobs of other equipment.
What's your favorite social network?
I'm something of a tumblr junkie.
Who do you wish followed you?
Jerry Seinfeld!
Why did you become a journalist?
I don't think I'm really good at anything else! I'm a talker, I ask a lot of questions and I love to write. Seems like it was made for me.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did! I actually drew the comic for every issue for a while.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm really happy with the cultural funding piece I worked in for Artvoice. It was one of my heaviest assignments ever.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Get enough sleep. Don't let anyone push you around. Know your rights, know the law.
