Female Founder Of A Billion-Dollar Company: 10 Signs You're An Entrepreneur Original
I know what it is like to be a reluctant entrepreneur. Back in 2014, when I first started thinking about Starling Bank, if anyone had told me, “Ah, so you are going to be an entrepreneur,” I’d have said, “Absolutely not.” I was similarly reluctant to use the word “founder.” Growing up, I always believed entrepreneurs were inventors. They made something. Today’s example might be James Dyson, because he invented the first bagless vacuum cleaner. Elon Musk invented a rocket that went into space.

What It Takes to Lead a Unicorn
Founding a business and then successfully scaling it to become a major player in the market is rare, but it does happen. To achieve this remarkable feat of scaling, a business needs to perfect the seemingly elusive combination of a great product, perfect timing, a determined founder, a talented and hardworking team, some chutzpah and a little bit of luck. It has been said that leading a high-growth business is like hanging onto a rocket ship. It’s tense, exhausting and all consuming.
Stop trying to fix women founders - fix the funding system, says Starling Bank founder ANNE BODEN
Reflecting on the journey that led me to establish Starling Bank, I am reminded of the countless meetings and the sheer determination it took to secure our first investment. It was a gruelling process, one that involved close to 300 meetings over two years! But beyond the challenges of building a business from scratch, what struck me most profoundly was the glaring inequality that pervaded every room I entered.

A question of trust - how non-bank brands will take a $7 trillion slice of financial services.
OK, I’ll say it. A lot of people don’t trust banks. This was, in great part, a motivation for the creation of Starling. Dissatisfaction with banks was at an all time low following the 2008/09 global credit crisis. While we’ve made some progress as an industry, nearly all of it has been at the hands of the new breed of fintechs like Starling, rather than the traditional banks. (This is backed by the latest bank switching data.

Breaking barriers and breaking even
Five years ago, I stood in front of numerous investors to outline my vision of a new sort of bank. It would be a technology-led bank like no other and a profitable business, I announced, perhaps quite boldly because I didn’t even have a banking licence at the time. My pitch was, in the main, greeted with the healthy scepticism that many start-ups encounter. Today, I’m pleased to say that Starling has become the first of the new breed of digital banks to become profitable.
Lending in the time of coronavirus
As an entrepreneur myself, I’m acutely aware that behind every small company that’s suffering because of the coronavirus emergency is a business owner, or team, feeling the stress very personally. Some will have poured their savings, not to mention, their heart and soul, into their businesses. For many, their company is more than their livelihood; it’s their life.
2019 year in review: Learning to fly - Starling Bank
7th January 2020 by: Anne Boden If 2019 was a year of rocketship growth for Starling - we passed one million customer accounts and £1 billion on deposit, more than doubled our employee headcount to 900+, raised £205 million more in funding and opened three new offices - it was also the year we learned to fly. Starting a company from scratch and growing it is one thing, but taking it to scale without losing sight of what makes it different and special is quite another.
Why Starling Bank is changing its overdraft pricing
16th December 2019 by: Anne Boden Borrowing money on an overdraft can be stressful enough without having to worry about whether or not you can understand the charges attached. That’s why Starling has always had a simple, transparent and easy-to-understand approach to its overdraft charging with a single flat interest rate of 15% (EAR variable). We’re now revising the overdraft rate on our personal current account from 15% to 15%, 25% or 35%, dependent on customers’ credit scores from 1 April 2020.
Gender pay gap: Our progress so far
3rd April 2019 by: Anne Boden Today Starling is releasing its latest gender pay gap figures. I’m pleased to report that we are making good progress. Since our first such report last year, the median gender pay gap has decreased from 34.69% to 13.83%, while the mean has gone from 30.32% to 21.18%. Mean gender pay gap in hourly pay 2019 2018 2017 21.18% 30.32% 25.79% Median gender pay gap in hourly pay 2019 2018 2017 13.83% 34.69% 48.91% 2019 figures correct as of 27 March 2019.
How we’re changing banking in 2019
7th January 2019 by: Anne Boden This is going to be our biggest year ever at Starling Bank. The year 2018 was a tremendous time of growth and accolades, with customer numbers growing from 50,000 to more than 400,000 and our headcount expanding from 130 to top 300. Looking forward into 2019, we’re expecting to hit one million customers this year. We’ll also be launching a host of new products and features, starting with Euro accounts for UK residents.
Welcome to Banking-as-a-Service
10th October 2018 by: Anne Boden Subscribeto blog updates I’d like to make an important announcement. I am announcing the death of transaction banking. To those of you who are transaction bankers, I offer my sympathy. But this is also a time of celebration, a time to celebrate a new age of banking – the age of the API – the age of Banking-as-a-Service.
Future of money: In 2040, Starling Bank believes cash and credit cards will be relics of the past
You’ve just got an electric autonomous taxi from the gym to work, picked up a coffee and—in the lift to your office—watched a short advert on the heads-up display projected by your wearable digital assistant, clipped to your collar. In a matter of minutes, four transactions have taken place. And you haven’t put your hand in your pocket to get out a purse once. Notes and coins have long since disappeared, and nobody even uses their phone to pay for things anymore.
Why we need to #MAKEMONEYEQUAL
13th March 2018 by: Anne Boden At Starling, I have the great privilege of working with an incredibly intelligent and capable team. Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that all of them are fairly comfortable talking about money. From investing and pensions to bargains and rainy-day funds, they have passions and personal projects that they like to spend their money on – fashion, tech, travel – and they all have their own techniques for saving, cutting back and finding deals.
Winning minds - and hearts – Starling Bank
When I started the project that ultimately became Starling Bank all the way back in 2014, I was determined that we would be different. My motivations were straightforward; I wanted to fundamentally redefine how people interact with their banks.
Explaining PSD2 without TLAs is tough!
Updated 12 January 2018 from original post 9 October 2015. For those who experienced the roller coaster that was Europe’s implementation of the Payment Services Directive (PSD1) – here comes PSD2. And before the initiatives outlined in PSD1 have been fully dealt with. We won’t lower ourselves to jokes about bad movie sequels, so moving on.
What impact will PSD2 regulation have on consumers?
2018 is set to change retail banking as we know it. As the PSD2 regulation (Revised Payment Service Directive) becomes implemented, banks’ monopoly on their customers’ account information and payment services will disappear. Transparency will be key. Anne Boden talked us through the changes, and the potential benefits for consumers. This interview was conducted as part of a media partnership between Hot Topics and Money 2020 Europe.
How to start a payments company - interview with Michael Kent
Will Beeson interviews Michael Kent from Azimo, who talks about how he became an entrepreneur and how the company got started. Michael Kent is a serial entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Azimo, one of Europe’s most successful fintechs of recent years. He is also co-founder and a non-executive director of Tandem, a new digital-only bank in the UK. Previously, Michael co-founded Small World Financial Services, a money transmission provider, which he grew to $4.5bn in annual transaction volumes.
What do retail customers want?
What is our relationship with money? Do we really know? Are retail customers changing their financial habits at all? Chris Skinner finds out. I blogged the other day about too many banks and that there’s not a big enough market for 40 of them here in Britain. It made me think about what customers really want. We talk about digital, apps, mobile and more, yet the average customer … are they bothered? I suspect that many don’t give a jot about whether the bank offers these or not.
Making Money Smarter
Follow this event to get an email the next time it’s scheduled. Be the first to know if a spot becomes available. The UK isn't just about finance these days. Tech companies are an increasingly large part of the economic pie, and when culture, vibrant cities, and finance intersect with technology, new and disruptive ideas flourish. From new forms of community currency, to systems that are upending the oldest names in banking, the UK's cities are becoming fertile ground for these overlapping forces.
Explaining PSD2 without TLAs is tough!
The European Parliament recently voted to pass the Payment Services 2 Directive (PSD2). In a rather timely fashion, we had just published a paper on this subject, so have reproduced it here. (If you would like a copy of the original, please email terry@starlingbank.com.) I would like to thank all of the Starling team, as it was genuinely a group effort on tackling this content, but particular thanks to Mark Hipperson, Julian Sawyer, Sarah Williams-Gardener and Terry McParlane.
Full-stack banking
Last month, we published (on the Starling website) a view on the changing shape of the UK retail banking market, including a useful infographic describing the existing and new competitors coming into the banking landscape. In the commentary that followed, quite a few people subsequently described Starling as a full-stack bank, and those less familiar with the phrase have asked me to explain. So, here goes. First, a bit of technology education for the uninitiated.
