Reframing Canada’s Digital Economy for a New Economic Reality
By Anne Patterson and Erhan Baydar October 8, 2026 Canada cannot make good decisions about skills, immigration, technology investment, or productivity if it does not have a clear picture of where digital work is actually happening. And, increasingly, it is happening far beyond the traditional technology sector. The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) estimates roughly one in eight Canadian workers is now part of the digital economy.
MY TURN: Much at stake in Hayden council race
City planning done in Hayden affects all of us. Joy Richards, in writing “Choose Good Candidates,” does not say what a good candidate is, but Pew Research says voters gravitate to candidates who share their political views. I’m sure Joy is no different. As a prominent (faux) North Idaho Republican, Joy’s preferred candidates are often NIR members too, or they are malleable enough to become one. Although Joy “strongly supported” Sandy White for Hayden in 2021, she does not tell us why.
MY TURN: Service does NOT = freedom
You know fall is in the air in North Idaho when you step outside early in the morning and feel the “chill” from the night before. You know your neighbor is onto a new multi-level marketing scheme when he calls and says, “I have something really big to share with you.” And you can tell the general election season is right around the corner when the North Idaho Republicans start running propaganda pieces in the local paper and dusting off their website.
MY TURN: Response to Jim Jones
Jim Jones must have a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). According to Psychiatrist Dr. Carol Lieberman, TDS should be added to the next Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Lieberman’s study indicates that the people most susceptible to TDS are super-feminists, and insecure men who are angry at not having achieved what they wanted. In his op-ed published June 11, Jones is trying to convince readers that Donald Trump is disrespecting our troops. His evidence?
MY TURN: Putting minors in harm's way
Is the CLN board banning books from our public libraries? No. Books are being challenged all over our state, but a challenge is not a book ban. A challenge occurs when a parent or guardian exercises their right of free speech and petition.
MY TURN: Zero is a placeholder
A zero is a placeholder. It has no value, but it does serve an important function. It temporarily occupies the position of another person or thing. Our elected board of trustees at North Idaho College currently contains two placeholders, Zimmerman and Corkill, elected in 2022. They were recruited by the North Idaho Republicans (NIR), a group not even affiliated with the official Republican Party in Idaho.
MY TURN: Carping critics
Has anyone else grown weary of the small group of faultfinders who attend every North Idaho College board meeting? Their repetitive diatribes and sometimes cheeky behavior are frustrating for those waiting their turn to speak. They frequently remind us that Dr. South, who has been invaluable in navigating accreditation, is still on staff. They seem unaware that it was Dr. South’s team of experts and effective action steps which quickly moved the college in the right direction last year.
MY TURN: Maybe the 'bad guys' are really the 'good guys'
Rumors and misinformation often align with group affiliations. Zeke Winchestor’s letter may be an example. He says the bad guys on the board at NIC are ‘the majority’ because they hired the wrong attorney. Newcomers unfamiliar with the backstory can get up to speed by reading “My Turn, Saving NIC from Its Friends" by Art Macomber, dated Nov. 1, 2022. Fast forward to today, and note that voters elected a new majority last November, thwarting an attempted board takeover.
US engagement with Afghanistan isn’t over - and we need a new policy
America still has a few tools to support its interests in Afghanistan but using them requires a focus beyond humanitarian relief and politically wishing the issue would disappear.
Afghanistan's Future Depends on the United States and Pakistan Working Together
In a deal signed with the Taliban in February 2020, the United States agreed to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan by May this year. The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is trying to stick to this peace deal, but it is faced with some difficult challenges as violence remains high and little progress has been made on intra-Afghan talks.
Resilience and risk in the US foreign service
For U.S. foreign service officers posted abroad, meeting with broad segments of society and institutions other than official government entities in their host nations is a critical component of their mission. However, in recent years, particularly in the wake of the 2012 Benghazi attacks, State Department policies have become increasingly risk-intolerant of personnel movements off of secure embassy compounds, inhibiting diplomats’ ability to carry out their work in the nation’s interest.
We Have to Be There
The Foreign Service Journal > September 2019 > We Have to Be There The rise of risk aversion at the State Department has undermined U.S. diplomats’ ability to work effectively, with serious unintended consequences for national security. BY ANNE WOODS PATTERSON For many years, the value added of U.S. diplomats was knowing more about foreign countries and foreigners than any other countries’ diplomats.
148953: Boucher's meeting with Foreign Minister Qureshi
During a March 28 meeting with Assistant Secretary or South and Central Asian Affairs Boucher, Foreign Minister-designate Shah Mehmood Qureshi confirmed that the new government wanted to work with the U.S. to combat extremism, increase trade and extend cooperation with India and Afghanistan.
