The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of the Chambre Régionale d’Agriculture de Bretagne (Saint-Nicolas-du-Pélem, France). On this demonstration farm, animals are raised and marketed for meat in the same way as on a conventional commercial farm. Young nulliparous sows (Landrace x Large White) are randomly assigned upon purchase to one of two independent reproductive units, which feature distinct housing environments.
