BioWare Didn't Lose Its Magic—But the Rest of the Industry Caught Up
At the height of its golden age, BioWare was practically a household name. While there was plenty of fierce competition in the RPG genre, BioWare was consistently held in high regard, thanks in no small part to their work on the original Baldur's Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Even to this day, few games emphasized the "role playing" aspect of role-playing games as much as Dragon Age and Mass Effect did. Alas, the BioWare magic has run out and the time has come for their closure.
Hong Kong puts AI copyright legislative amendments on hold, and pivots to establishing operational guidelines
Background Hong Kong's engagement with AI and copyright has moved through several phases in recent years. In early 2024, the Government commenced plans for a review of Hong Kong’s copyright legislation to keep up with AI developments, as noted in our publication "The Age of AI — Hong Kong Plans Consultation on Copyright Protection".
Genshin Impact's Six Years of Balancing: What Worked and What Doesn't
As Genshin Impactcelebrates its sixth anniversary, one can't help but wonder what the game will look like in another six years. It is atypical for any game to have such an avid following after such a long time after all, especially a live-service mobile game. For all anyone knows, Genshin Impact could survive indefinitely on the back of its story and worldbuilding, or it could wither away simply because people found the next big game.
The Rise of the Chinese AAA Gaming Industry: Ananta, The Defiant, and Nodusfall
There has never been a more appropriate time to use the phrase, "A new player has entered the game," than after Gamescom 2026. While the event has been used to show off upcoming games for years, this is the first year where Gamescom's opening night has had a significant Chinese gaming industry presence. With games like Ananta, The Defiant, and Nodusfall coming in the near future, it's a clear sign that other AAA developers are going to have to put their best foot forward if they wish to compete.
After Three Halo: Combat Evolved Remakes, Where Does Halo Go From Here?
If one were to describe Halo: Campaign Evolved in a single word, it would be difficult to find a more fitting descriptor than "decent." By most accounts, this full remake of Halo: Combat Evolved does a lot to modernize some of the dated mechanics of the original game, which is arguably necessary if the franchise is to find any sort of a foothold on PlayStation platforms.
Genshin Impact Retrospective: The Road to Snezhnaya
With the release of Sandrone as a playable character, the Nod-Krai chapter of the Traveler's tales in Teyvat will come to a close. While Nod-Krai is technically not a major region by Genshin Impact's standards, it nonetheless serves as an important bridge between the Natlan and upcoming Snezhnaya story arcs.
Can Xbox's Next Year of Games Save the Brand?
Xbox's history has been like a roller coaster, and their last couple of years have been a near undeniable period of decline. Microsoft would never publicly admit to such a thing, but it's hard to imagine that mass layoffs, a suicidal 50% price hike for their signature game subscription service, and unilaterally releasing a game from Xbox's most famous (and now formerly exclusive) IPon a competitor's platform are signs that Xbox is suffering from success.
Can Bethesda Save Starfield?
If there's one thing that Bethesda demands of its audience, it's patience. While most people would generally agree that it's not a bad thing for developers to take their time, this also comes with the expectation that the game is near perfect on release. Unfortunately for Bethesda, Starfield's launch almost three years ago proved to be quite polarizing, and their relative silence since then was hardly reassuring.
Slitherlink Corner Patterns: The Complete Visual Guide
Slitherlink is a logic puzzle where you draw a single closed loop on a grid using number clues. Each number tells you how many of its four surrounding edges are part of the loop. No number? That cell could have any count. Corners are where you should always start solving — they have fewer edges (only 2 outer edges touching the grid boundary), which means fewer possibilities and faster deductions.
Building a Slitherlink Puzzle Engine in Rust + WebAssembly
Most puzzle websites generate puzzles with simple random placement. We built a proper constraint-based engine in Rust that generates, solves, and rates Slitherlink puzzles on a 10-level difficulty scale — then compiles to WebAssembly for browser use. Why Rust? Slitherlink generation is computationally expensive. A 10×10 grid has 220 possible edges.
Slitherlink Corner Patterns: The First Thing Every Solver Should Learn
Introduction If you've ever stared at a Slitherlink grid, feeling a mix of intrigue and intimidation, you're not alone. This logic puzzle, also known as Fences or Loop the Loop, offers a pure test of deductive reasoning. Unlike Sudoku, which relies on placing numbers, Slitherlink is about topology and geometry—constructing a single continuous loop. For beginners, the grid can seem chaotic. But experienced solvers know that the chaos is an illusion.
Why I Built a File Converter That Doesn't Upload Your Files
The Problem with Cloud Converters We've all been there. You have a PNG you need as a JPG. You have a WAV file you need as an MP3. Or maybe a JSON file you need to convert to YAML. You Google it. You click the first result: "Free Online Converter!" It asks you to upload your file. You hesitate. Maybe that file is a scan of your ID. Maybe it's a financial spreadsheet. Maybe it's a confidential work document.
5 Essential Slitherlink Solving Techniques Every Puzzler Should Know
Slitherlink is a fascinating logic puzzle where you draw a single closed loop on a grid using clues. If you are new to it or want to sharpen your skills, here are 5 essential techniques. 1. The Zero Clue Elimination When you see a 0 in a cell, immediately mark all four edges around it as "no line." This is the simplest and most powerful move. ·---· · · | | · · · · | 0 | · · · · | | ·---· · · Every edge around the 0 is guaranteed to have no line. 2.
Building a Privacy-First File Converter That Runs 100% in Your Browser
Most online file converters upload your files to a server. But what if you could convert files without them ever leaving your device? That is exactly what OmniConvert does β 94 file conversions and 118 unit conversions, all running client-side in your browser using WebAssembly.
Fallout TV: Is New Vegas Canon Anymore?
If there were ever a sure bet in life, it's that a video game adaptation will always make someone unhappy. As it turns out, translating a game from an interactive format with no defined time constraint to a non-interactive medium with a limited view time means that some concessions need to be made. In the case of the Fallout TV show, there's an extra problem in that it takes place after Fallout: New Vegas, a beloved entry in the franchise with a lot of potential player-defined endings.
Anson Chan's Top 5 Games of 2025
While 2025 was a relatively tame year when it came to AAA game releases, there were still plenty of standout titles if you knew where to look. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 of course was the breakout hit of the year, definitively proving that you don't really need 20 different studios and billions of dollars to deliver a top-tier experience. Naturally, the success of one game isn't indicative of an upheaval in the entire industry.

Halo: Campaign Evolved and the Future of Xbox
For decades, Halo was Xbox's crown jewel. The two were intertwined to the point that you couldn't mention Xbox without also mentioning Halo and vice versa. Halo effectively gave Xbox a fighting chance in the console market after all. By the time Halo 3 came out, it was almost impossible to imagine that Xbox would ever part with the game franchise that defined the console multiplayer FPS experience. Alas, all things must change.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: From Best to Worst Deal in Gaming
This year has not been kind to Xbox users as Microsoft continually finds new and creative ways to make their customers mad. Xbox's attempt to kill its own brand is making huge progress as they increased the subscription costs of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate by 50%.
From Genshin Impact to Honkai: Nexus Anima - Can Hoyo Fans Keep Up?
As Genshin Impact's fifth anniversary draws near, it's clear that HoYoverse has big plans in store for their most prolific game. The Song of the Welkin Moon arc has only just begun with the Luna I update, but it's a strong indicator of where the developers plan to take Genshin in the coming years.
Data Science Project Advice for Junior Data Scientist
One of the key lessons I’ve learned from working on machine learning projects is the importance of being agile. From my experience, a data science project or a predictive model often comes with requirement changes, or the results may not meet expectations, requiring me to revisit and restructure the dataset. Therefore, having an agile, iterative and well-communication workflows helps manage stakeholder expectations and meet deadlines.
Xbox Layoffs: Has Microsoft's Studio Buying Strategy Failed?
After spending a near-incomprehensible amount of money and resources on studio acquisitions, Microsoft is finally ready to make its mark on the gaming industry by... firing another 9,000 workers, about 4% of its workforce. While this latest wave of layoffs is not specific to the Xbox division, there were no shortage of victims in gaming-related products and services.

Doom: The Dark Ages Review - All the Gory, None of the Glory
With the seemingly decisive conclusion of the Doom Slayer's story in Doom Eternal, id Software has decided to go back into the past to explore the origin of the only foe that Hell's demons ever feared in Doom: The Dark Ages. As one would expect, this means a change in scenery, more cutscenes, actual characters, and a positively medieval set of new weapons. Thankfully, there's no drawn out process where you slowly work your way up from lowly grunt to demon slayer extraordinaire.

Oblivion to Starfield: Bethesda's 20 Year Journey to The Elder Scrolls 6
There's something to be said about the loyalty of The Elder Scrolls fans when Bethesda can re-release a 20-year-old game with no official marketing and it still ends up at the top of Steam's bestseller list. Amusingly, there's even a non-zero chance that some of the people who are currently playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered weren't born when the game first came out. Admittedly, this loyalty isn't entirely undeserved when you look at Bethesda's history.
What Avowed Gets Right (and Wrong) About Loot
If there's one thing that everyone can agree on when it comes to game mechanics, it's that if loot is present, then it has to be enticing enough for players to actually want to loot it. Of course, what this means in practice depends on a game-to-game basis, and the results aren't always clear cut. Obsidian's approach to loot in their latest RPG, Avowed, has demonstrated that even developers as experienced as they are can make mistakes.

Anson Chan's Top 5 Games of 2024
Looking back at all the games of 2024, it would be cliched to say that there were too many good games to decide which would be the best. It would be far more accurate to say that there were too many interesting-looking games to try instead. Indeed, 2024 might have been the first year to make Xbox Game Pass feel like a trip to the buffet after already consuming a full dinner with dessert and appetizers.

Is Xbox Game Pass Running Out of Steam?
From its very inception, Xbox Game Pass sounded like a fantastical business model and a dream come true for hardcore game enthusiasts. After all, who wouldn't want access to hundreds of games at a fraction of the cost? Even Microsoft seemed to wholeheartedly embrace Game Pass, though it almost certainly costs them a pretty penny to maintain the catalogue. However, recent events would suggest that Microsoft has dug themselves into a hole of sorts.
Halo TV Season 2 Review - How Far Should Artistic License Go?
It's no secret that live-action video-game adaptations tend to be hit or miss. History certainly suggests that such adaptations have an unfortunate tendency to veer toward the latter. One could almost be forgiven for thinking that the genre is cursed, forever doomed to result in disappointing media that appeals to neither fans nor newcomers. The first season of the Halo TV show definitely felt like it was born of a wish made on a severed monkey's paw.
Climate-Science Deniers, Right-Wing Think Tanks, and Fossil Fuel Shills Are Plotting Against the Clean Energy Transition

GTA Online's Success Undermines GTA 6's Relationship With Political Satire
If there's one thing that the Grand Theft Auto series is no stranger to, it's American politics. There was a time when lawyers and politicians were practically tripping over each other in an attempt to denounce Rockstar Games for any number of reasons. Much like how rock and roll and Dungeons & Dragons were considered countercultural at best and outright satanic at worst, GTA was seen as one of the faces of an industry that was corrupting children and turning them into violent criminals.

Your smart TV knows what you're watching
If you bought a new smart TV during any of the holiday sales, there's likely to be an uninvited guest watching along with you. The most popular smart TVs sold today use automatic content recognition (ACR), a kind of ad surveillance technology that collects data on everything you view and sends it to a proprietary database to identify what you're watching and serve you highly targeted ads. The software is largely hidden from view, and it's complicated to opt out.
Anson Chan's Top 5 Games of 2023
Between the many releases on Xbox Game Pass and the naturally crowded holiday season, 2023 proved to be a very good year for games. Recency bias aside, it certainly felt like there were way too many games to play. Of course, a few stood out more than others, and for good reason. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name Like a Dragon Gaiden is unquestionably one of my favorite games of the year.
The Game that Died in Four Days: The Day Before Timeline
It is an unfortunate reality that video game developers will sometimes terminate their game's services whether it be for financial, legal, or creative reasons. It is much rarer for a game to release in such a state that it single-handedly kills the developer. Even then, it typically takes at least a month for a company to close down. In what might be a modern record, the game The Day Before managed to end its developer, FNTASTIC, just four days after release.
Next time you play Skyrim, take some time to read the numerous books you find, we promise it's worth it!
Books tend to be a subject that is scholarly, or nerdy - but they play an important role in the real world. In Skyrim, players will find hundreds of different books to open, read, and explore deeper lore and topics within Tamriel. These books add additional flavor to the world around the Dragonborn, and chuckles from players in many other cases. This post was originally published in 2017 as part of our Bullet Points series.
