Modeling the effect of random roughness on synthetic aperture sonar image statistics
For the comparisons that follow, we hold the spectral slope, γ, constant and vary the spectral strength, β, as a free parameter to fit SI versus range. The noise parameter, θn is also fit to the data. The dependence of SI on range allows us to fit the rms slope (via) in an unambiguous fashion via the following steps: • Estimate the free parameters in the K-distribution from the near range image part that has relatively larger grazing angles and is the most unaffected by slope modulation.

The experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual people accessing mental health crisis support helplines in Australia
ABSTRACT Available evidence affirms the effectiveness- of crisis helpline services in providing appropriate short-term intervention for many groups, but the unique needs of sexual minority adult callers may prevent them from deriving similar therapeutic benefit. Two hundred and forty-eight sexual minority adults from across Australia were asked about a previous personal crisis where they had accessed, or had considered accessing, a crisis helpline service.

Volunteering among Older Lesbian and Gay Adults: Associations with Mental, Physical and Social Well-Being
Introduction Research has shown that volunteering is associated with a range of mental and physical health benefits (Binder & Freytag, 2013; Borgonovi, 2008; Kim & Morgül, 2017; Stukas et al., 2015). These benefits may be particularly valuable in older age, when the risk of social isolation and inactivity can increase (Courtin & Knapp, 2017).

Direct inference of first-year sea ice thickness using broadband acoustic backscattering
Accurately monitoring sea ice is increasingly important given the rapid and extreme changes that are occurring in the Arctic. Indigenous communities have monitored Arctic sea ice thickness for centuries, but it has only been scientifically monitored on a semi-regular basis since the mid-twentieth century (Wadhams, 200052. Wadhams, P. (2000). Ice in the Ocean ( Gordon and Breach Science Publishers, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), p. 351.).

Why Criminalising Homosexuality is a Public Health Hazard
Homosexuality remains illegal in 38 of 55 African nations. Such a stance against homosexuality is concerning from ethical and human rights perspectives. It also poses serious risks from a public health perspective, not least of all because of the significant rates of HIV across Africa. Men who have sex with men account for a substantial minority of those affected by HIV, with their risk of infection more than double that of the general population.
