The Original Space Invaders – Why Zero Respect for Personal Boundaries Is a Good Thing
Cats have a reputation for being independent, and in many ways they are. But anyone who has tried to work at a laptop with a cat on the keyboard, or woken up with one sitting directly on their face, knows that they can also be needy, clingy, even downright intrusive! When a cat wants to be close, the concept of personal space simply does not apply. This behavior is not random, and these cats aren’t trying to be difficult.
Opinion: Anthony Smith: A maximum wage would be far more useful to our economy
Why no one wants to work anymore. That has been a common headline for economic and labor articles since the pandemic and while I have done my best to read each of them, more than a few have slipped past and I have forgotten details on those that I have already read. For much of what has already been said I agree with, but there is one factor that I have yet to see brought up and addressed.

Salesforce celebrates Earth Month by announcing global coalition to invest in nature
Our environmental crisis is a generation-defining threat to sustaining human life on our planet. In the face of this crisis, no other corporation is taking bold climate action quite like Salesforce, a NationSwell Institutional Member. The software company is currently a rarity among organizations of its scale: Not only does it net zero emissions across its full value chain, but it also achieved 100% renewal energy.
Learnings from NationSwell and Verizon's event on uniting to close the economic divide.
Building strong communities has never been more important. In addition to impacting the health of millions, the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged local businesses and economies, disrupted our education system, and deepened the divides that exist between those with and without access to technology. That is especially true for low-income, under-resourced, and minority populations. To encourage long-term recovery, we need to find ways to not only build back better — but build back right.

7 lessons from women leaders on how investing in women pays off
Women leaders bring an authentic identity and perspective to the table when solving problems and leading teams. The 20 years since 9/11 created new opportunities for women to lead — in our military, in our communities, and in our workplaces. Accordingly, we have seen a dramatic shift as women in all aspects of our economy, philanthropy, and government have changed what it means to serve and lead in this country.

Here are some highlights from our partnership. What Bad Party Guests Can Teach Us About Bridging Divides Who is the perfect dinner guest? It is the person who tells the best story? Are Cities Willing to Cut Police Spending and Invest in Community Violence Prevention?
[Ira L. Black/Getty] We know that a public health approach can reduce gun violence. With budgets tight, funding those programs will take divesting from law enforcement. by Anthony Smith and Rachel Davis ·September 11, 2020 As we move into the fall of 2020, long-standing racial injustices have sparked a once-in-a-generation protest movement. Cities are at the forefront and must find ways to address the demands of those who have been silenced for too long.
Mayors must lead in reimagining public safety Original
With cities seeing a spike in violence in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, some elected officials are advancing knee-jerk solutions like investing more in policing, putting more people in jail, or even bringing in federal troops. But the truth is, we won’t improve public safety by holding on to the failed, get-tough policies of the past. In this moment of national reckoning on race, leaders – and particularly mayors and other local officials —must reimagine public safety in America’s cities.
What Remains of Psychoanalysis: The Defenses
Freud is not dead (nor should we forget any of the old masters). Just as contemplation of Renaissance painters continues to arouse inspiration in modern artists, this foundational figure of organized psychological science deserve reflection. Today, faster-paced, cognitive -behavioral approaches are all the rage. It seems anything associated with our forefathers is considered obsolete; that Freud and Co. are merely a niche for the erudite.
Paranoia: It's More Than Fear
Paranoia is not simply synonymous with fear. It is yet another psychiatric term misrepresented/misunderstood by society at large that seeps into clinical work. More than once I’ve had to remind a student or supervisee that someone fearing the worst, like in anxiety, does not qualify as paranoia. Though I just bashed pop culture for misrepresenting paranoia, there is a popular Vietnam-era song I’ve used to help people understand it.
Safety is rooted in everyone having enough resources
Community Voices features opinion pieces from a wide variety of authors and perspectives. (Submission Guidelines) 3 mins ago I was raised to believe that police are a necessary component of our society. If crime is an unavoidable part of human life, it made sense that there would be an armed force to combat those acts of violence. Where I grew up near Lake of the Isles, a predominantly white neighborhood, it was easy to feel protected when my peers and I were largely untouched by police.

Leveraging business diversity
Diverse services in a business can cause complexity, but they also offer opportunity. MercyCare has capitalised on its seemingly disparate aged care and early learning services to bring them together for the benefit of all. At first glance, aged care and early learning seem to have little in common. They touch the polar phases of life. But dive a little deeper, and our experience shows something very different.
Diversity builds good business
Look around your office. If one in five of your colleagues are living with a disability, then your workplace is reflective of our broader community. If that’s not the case, your office holds a mirror to a broader societal trend. In Australia today participation in employment for people living with a disability is low and underemployed is high, says MercyCare Disability Services Manager Gill Watts. Today is International Day of People with Disabilities.
How can we be a champion for diversity and inclusion?
This year I watched more than 600 people be enthralled by MercyCare guest Orator, tennis legend and disability advocate Dylan Alcott. Told with his characteristic unbridled passion, his lived experiences had many of us thinking, how can I be a champion for diversity and inclusion? At MercyCare it is a question we hold close to our hearts. It was why we chose Diversity and Inclusion as the theme of our signature event, Oration 2019, and why we chose to debut our Diversity Art Collection there.

E-commerce battles for logistical domination continue to grow

Amazon’s 2019 Prime Day, a two-day event for members with site-wide deals, deep price discounts and free expedited shipping was held last week. Large traditional retailers such as Walmart, Target and BestBuy are getting in on the action with fast shipping and exclusive incentives for members.
Canada Just Announced a Ban on Single-Use Plastics. That’s a Big Deal for Our Oceans.
Experts estimate that humans add 8 million tons of plastic waste to our planet’s oceans each year. Canada’s new ban on single-use plastic items will help put an end to that. On Monday morning, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his government will move to implement a federal ban on single-use plastic items within the next two years.
Radford City Council: Thank you for your investment in the future
By Kate McConnell and Anthony Smith Over the past 18 months, the pages of this newspaper have been replete with stories focused on the challenges facing Radford as an independent city, and there will surely be more such stories to come. However, it is critical that we pause today and thank the Radford City Council for its leadership, forethought and timely investment in Radford’s future.
Letters from our readers for Tuesday, December 19, 2017 | The Telegraph
Wrong is wrong? In the editor’s reply to Joe Hubbard’s letter Monday, Dec. 11 regarding the new garbage bill, he stated that the big change was going from quarterly to annual billing. That is not what I see as the big change. Whoever made up these rules now wants to charge $300 per year for any structure on a piece of land that no one has been living. This is absurd. How can you legally charge for garbage service when there is none?

Without error? The claim of biblical inerrancy has been discussed in recent editorial columns. Two by Erick Erickson were confusing and contradictory. Excellent columns by Bill Ferguson and Bill Cummings took an opposite approach. As an adjunct teacher I have taught over 35 Old and New Testament courses for three different colleges during and after 40 years of pastoral ministry. I think I am reasonably familiar with the scriptures. I believe God is totally worthy of worship, but the Bible is not.

Sodom and Gomorrah I am sure that in some churches some pastors will use hurricanes Harvey and Irma to show that God is punishing us for being such a “godless people.” To me this type of argument has the same logic as burning down the barn to get rid of the rats. As I was reflecting on this I decided to check up on the Old Testament story of Abraham’s attempt to save the city of Sodom.

I-16 enforcement When the four young ladies were killed because a semi slammed into the rear of their vehicle killing these promising nursing students, I wrote in to this column to decry the lack of law enforcement on this highway. I go to Dublin on this road and some people think it is their personal racetrack, weaving in and out of traffic to arrive at their destination maybe five minutes sooner than if they had obeyed the speed limit.

Hypocrisy of the left In Monday’s Telegraph a political cartoon suggests President Trump was not serious about preserving, protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States. What part of defending the border is against the Constitution? What part of our immigration laws allows illegal crossing of our border? What part of ensuring domestic tranquility is allowing Islamic terrorists from coming into our nation?

Damage Trump I just read an article by Renee Graham, a Boston Globe columnist, who stated due to President-elect Donald Trump, more people of color are buying guns to protect themselves. She further states that African Americans, Latinos and Muslims with firearms will always be treated as suspects, not victims under his administration.
Working together to ensure public safety in 21st-century Minneapolis
Every day, mayors across the country, including here in Minneapolis, are guided by a vision of a city that runs well for everyone. A core part of that work is making sure every resident is safe in every neighborhood. That includes residents like the young people I had the honor of meeting at Urban Ventures and YouthLink when I visited Minneapolis.
America Must Build On Commitment To Young People, Especially Black Boy
The result of last week’s long-awaited presidential election has each of us reflecting on our collective futures. As national and local leaders, we are considering how to both protect and build on the progress we have made to expand opportunity for our communities over the past eight years, and enlist all corners of our community to tackle the persistent challenges we still face.
Channel 4: a national treasure?
Channel 4’s new drama series, National Treasure, strikes familiar notes: politically engaged, contemporary, challenging. An ageing comedian, played by Robbie Coltrane, now reduced to presenting a daytime show on Channel 4 (where else?), is accused of sexual crimes in the distant past. A pair of odiously fashionable commissioning editors at Horseferry Road tells him his hosting duties will not be needed for the time being.
We Must Light a Path to Hope, Opportunity for Young, Black Men
The past few months have tested our resolve and strengthened our commitment to reducing violence against Black men and boys. Keeping Black men and boys safe is at the forefront of our hearts and minds, with cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas seeing spikes in violence, and the string of police-involved shootings of African American men coupled with violence against police officers.
Justice Deferred: Our Work is Far From Done - EBONY
In 1968, the world watched as America imploded. Our descent into the Vietnam War and the continuing struggles for civil rights drew stark contrasts for American voters. At the very moment that we needed visionary leadership on these issues, two of our greatest voices for peace and justice—Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy—were struck down. There was civil unrest on the streets and protests on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
