Abstract This article explores the role of children and young people as change agents in promoting ethical and responsible tourism at the local level. Drawing on a youth participatory research project that used social theatre as a medium of inquiry and advocacy, the study explores how young participants navigated roles as researchers, educators, and activists.

1 BACKGROUND It is now 30 years since Australia ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). While much has been achieved in this time, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, in its Concluding Observations to Australia's most recent report on its obligations (2019), requested urgent attention to several rights “gaps” to improve its standing in relation to children's rights.
