1 What Is Comparative Thanatology? Birth and death are coupled phenomena, yet in popular discourses, although birth is largely demystified, death is not. In a theoretical sense, regardless of whether one adopts a physiological [1], psychological [2], or philosophical [3] perspective, discrepancies and debates are a norm in thanatology, that is, the study of death and dying.

1 Introduction High mortality rates constitute an inevitable counterpart to high fecundities characteristic of most insect species (Price et al. 2011). As a consequence, information on stage-specific mortality is the key to understanding the ecology of insects, ranging from fundamental problems of life-history evolution to applied questions of pest management (Cornell and Hawkins 1995; Peterson et al. 2009; Speight, Hunter, and Watt 2008).
