Thailand diary: tuktuks, durians and leadership
“With the team still working from home following the recent earthquake, I’ve been making a conscious effort to maintain in-person connections where possible.” Yvonne Foo became ANZ Country Head for Thailand in 2023. Sunday for our family brings a weekend grocery run, which means hopping on my favourite mode of transport in Bangkok: the e-Tuktuk. It is affordable, fun and eco-friendly. Weekends are perfect for exploring Thailand’s vibrant markets.
Track record: how trust grew a public transport giant
Every day, Hong Kong’s MTR (Mass Transit Railway) takes five million journeys, with residents and visitors trusting it to deliver them to school, the office or shops.
The fibre battle: from the catwalk to your local mall
Think about it – you’re browsing in a shop and a piece of clothing catches your eye. “This battle for the hearts, minds and wallets of consumers impacts global supply chains, trade policies – and the price of your next outfit.” Do you check the label to see what fibres it’s made from – cotton, polyester, wool or something else? Does that influence whether you buy it, or do you care more about the cost and look?
Gaining currency: why global investors and market participants adore the Aussie Dollar
It’s no secret global investors have a deep affinity with the Australian dollar. “A weaker AUD generally benefits exporters, as they receive payments in foreign currencies that they can convert to AUD at favourable rates compared to previous years.” According to the Bank for International Settlements, the Australian dollar (AUD) accounted for 6.4 per cent of global foreign exchange turnover.
Davine: chasing the challenge
Growing up and seeing my mum undaunted by challenges taught me a great deal about how I would approach life and build a career. “The common link between all my roles is that I have always been chasing the challenge. And frankly, the tougher the challenge, the better”. My mum’s family immigrated from the north of Italy, arriving in Australia in 1951 when she was two.
LISTEN: the year of the borrower (again)
Strength across both bond and loan markets in recent weeks has 2025 poised to be another “year of the borrower”, according to ANZ’s Gavin Chappell, with record quarterly activity expected. Chappell, ANZ’s Head of Loan Syndications, told an On Air with ANZ Institutional podcast that markets had experienced a “super strong” start to the year, in terms of demand for both loans and bonds, amid very favourable conditions and high levels of liquidity.
TikTok, Instagram and viral food stardom
These days, a single viral post can turn a humble dish into a global sensation overnight. "Over the past two decades, social media has completely transformed consumer behaviour across all sectors, particularly across the food, beverage and agribusiness (FBA) supply chain." After thousands of years of trying to get children to eat vegetables, suddenly one quirky TikTok video can transform something like cucumber into the next trendy superfood, which every kid wants to eat.
Outlook 25: opportunity in REI
There’s a huge opportunity for growth in the resources, energy and infrastructure (REI) sectors in 2025, across Australia and through ANZ’s international network, as businesses continue to make the transition to a low-carbon economy. In Australia, activity in the renewables sector has been strong across wind, solar and batteries, and we expect that pipeline to continue to build throughout 2025.
Outlook 25: green & clean in FB&A
Businesses in the food, beverage & agriculture sector are facing a 2025 driven by clean and green consumer demands as they look to balance growth, innovation, and responsibility in an increasingly complex global marketplace. For many, the transition toward a low-carbon economy remains a top priority. Whether through increased use of renewable energy sources or sustainable supply chains, businesses are embedding environmentally conscious practices across their operations.
Outlook 25: payments & change
Customers in the payments space expect a real-time experience as we move into a real-time economy. Businesses that can adapt to the rapid and transformative changes shaping that economy will be best placed to succeed in 2025. All participants in the industry, whether they be a chief financial officer, treasurer, product manager or someone in a customer-facing role, need to be across these changes and understand how customer demands are evolving.
From vision to reality
In July this year, I attended an event in Singapore with a group of ANZ’s regional treasury customers “We migrated around 65,000 users from a 10-year-old vendor platform that was slow to change and costly to maintain, to a feature-rich, user-friendly platform built and owned by ANZ." These are people who work for some of the biggest and fastest-growing companies in the region.
House prices heading in opposite directions
The supply-demand imbalance in some capital cities means there’s just not enough properties to meet population growth at the moment, forcing up prices. "Auction clearance rates in Melbourne and Sydney have softened. ANZ Research now expects housing prices in Melbourne will fall 1.7 per cent by the end of this year.” Perth is where demand has been strongly outstripping supply, lifting prices 15.9 per cent so far in 2024.
A rising star who bleeds blue
A lot of companies talk about their commitment to young female talent and fostering diverse leaders. But the reality is a lot of it is just talk. According to the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the percentage of women on boards in the ASX200 was just 36 per cent in February 2023. Across Asia, the figure is closer to 20 per cent. I joined ANZ as a graduate in 2015 and have always felt supported in my career development.
Bringing compassion and ingenuity to families who need it most
Factors such as education disadvantages, employment opportunities and geographical barriers can exacerbate health disparities for rural Australians. These remarkable organisations are putting in the hard work to aid children and their families. For almost a century Royal Far West has been innovating to help children from rural and remote areas – supporting their developmental, mental and behavioural health to ensure they reach their full potential. This innovation is not slowing.
MoneyMinded makes an impression in Uganda
Since 2018 I have been volunteering overseas and helping vulnerable communities in Uganda. I have been involved in caring for orphaned children and vulnerable women, building houses and helping the local communities with daily tasks. After my second visit to Uganda in 2019, I realised I could use my skills and financial knowledge to have a greater and more specific impact in the community. Global footprint Upon returning I spoke about my experience with a colleague in Asia.
Twitter values our time. Can it value our dollar?
At ANZ we know Twitter is a popular social media platform and many studies have shown its influence in different domains including finance, politics and economics. After extensive research we found an opportunity to use its range of publicly available content to analyse the foreign exchange (FX) market. Liquid markets A group of four experts from across ANZ’s FX and fixed-income strategist teams spent four months building the tool.
Be brave enough to leap
Let’s face it, backing yourself isn’t easy. Putting your hand up for a promotion isn’t easy. And competing against colleagues for a vacant role certainly isn’t easy. Is the alternative any easier though? Over the years I’ve coined a term: ‘carpathy’. It means career apathy. This term relates to ‘good’ employees who show up, get the job done and are engaged. They have sound ethical judgment and demonstrate core values.
PODCAST: sticking to long-term change
Leigh said it was clear over the 18 months of the crisis successful businesses had used the adversity of COVID as a “catalyst for change”. “We've seen that all over our landscape, especially internally with our staff and externally with our customers,” he said. Nigel emphasised in an increasingly digital post-COVID era, businesses needed to be operationally robust and resilient.
Business outlook: digital as usual
MD Transaction Banking, ANZ Institutional The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us many but for corporates one thing is clear: digital operations are no longer a ‘nice to have’. They are a fundamental and critical part of modern business. Click image to zoom Tap image to zoom Pinch to zoom In 2020 there was still scepticism about digitisation in businesses. But COVID-19 taught us you can do things remotely, you can do things electronically.
