April Fulton’s Biography

I love food and I love to ask people questions. I wanted to be a journalist very early on and began interviewing everyone I met. I still have notebooks full of my own shorthand that I've forgotten how to read.

I grew up in Rhode Island, eating clamcakes and stuffies and working for the local newspaper, covering town council meetings and sewer board disputes. On-the-job training is the way to learn.

Then I moved to D.C., eating crab cakes and Smith Island cakes, and making my way up to covering…

What was your first job as a journalist?

I started at the Gazette Newspapers in Maryland. There's no training like covering cops, courts, and town council meetings.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My senior term paper was typed on an electric typewriter.

How is social media changing news?

It is allowing us to real-time access to sources, but it is also generating a lot of misinformation and fake "experts."
