The Taliban bans women’s educational books at Afghan universities
In late August 2025, the Taliban government in Afghanistan banned about 680 university books, including around 140 titles authored by women. The Ministry of Higher Education labelled the works “anti-Sharia (referring to not guiding religious and social conduct) and Taliban policies.” Universities must stop using them immediately. This order forms part of a broader crackdown on academic freedom in Afghan higher education.
ICC launches historic case against Joseph Kony for crimes against humanity
The International Criminal Court (ICC) began its first in-absentia confirmation hearing against Joseph Kony on 9 September 2025. Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), faces 39 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The charges include murder, rape, sexual slavery, and conscripting child soldiers between 2002 and 2005. Kony remains at large, but is represented by court-appointed defence counsel.
Vice-president Riek Machar accused of treason and atrocities in South Sudan
On 11 September 2025, Justice Minister Joseph Geng Akech confirmed that authorities charged Riek Machar with treason, murder, and crimes against humanity. The charges stem from a March 2025 militia attack in Nasir, Upper Nile State, allegedly carried out by Machar’s White Army. Officials report that the assault killed civilians and soldiers. PRESIDENT KIIR SUSPENDS VICE-PRESIDENT Following the indictment, President Salva Kiir suspended Machar from office through a decree broadcast on state radio.
