What was your first job as a journalist?
I created a niche magazine in 2005. I wrote a lot of the content, including some investigative pieces based on research and interviews.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I had to learn to type on one way back in high school.
How is social media changing news?
It travels faster and can originate with anyone, anywhere, at any time.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent, obviously, because he's Superman.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To dig below the surface and find the real story -- not the story one plans in advance, but the one that emerges from digging.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use Google to find background information about the companies, personalities, and trends I cover. I look at social media a lot.
What's your favorite social network?
I enjoy the discussions on Google+, though that has fallen off a bit lately.
Who do you wish followed you?
I'm pretty content with my following. I don't seek out celebrities and the like.
Why did you become a journalist?
I care about truth, and I write well. It is better to do it than to teach it, which is what I had done for about a decade before.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, there wasn't any, though I did contribute a poem and illustration to the French class's journal.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
"Is Digital Currency Catching On?" & "Tablet Computers: The Way Forward for Better Patient Experiences."
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't copy other people's styles. Find your own and work on perfecting that.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Really any time during the week. I don't check my email as much on weekends.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
I was offered the opportunity to interview Oliver Ratzesberger, Senior Vice President of Software at Teradata for Forebes.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
You do mean the worst, right? I do edit, too. Hard to say. I skip the bad ones, so I don't really remember them.
What's your favorite drink?

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I like to be outside, biking or walking. When inside and with no other pressing things to do, I would be reading.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Advertising Age. I'm very interested in marketing.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That you're getting an objective point of view when sponsored content really doesn't fully allow for that.
