Following the government’s announcement of the new free speech complaints scheme, our Director for Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom explains the next steps and what universities and colleges should be doing to prepare. I know that many institutions are working hard to secure, and to promote the importance of, free speech and academic freedom. We have already had a number of helpful and open conversations with universities and colleges that have raised concerns or questions with us.

Today the UK funding bodies have taken the next step towards the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029. The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of academic research and informs the allocation of around £2 billion of public research funding each year.
