Fainthearted? - Mishpacha
The first time I fainted, I was too young to understand what happened. One moment I was sitting on a hard plastic chair, my three-year-old legs swinging far above the floor as I waited for my shots… and then I was lying on a table, staring up at a horrified nurse who screamed for the doctor like the building was on fire. The second time, I was in pre-1A. Just a typical playground mishap, an extensive scrape, and my friends walked me to the office to get my knee cleaned and bandaged.
The Mirror - Mishpacha
On the wall in my childhood bedroom, there was a sign with my mother’s motto: “Creativity is not following the crowd, but daring to be different, striving to be what only you can be.” My mother a”h transformed our basement into a sanctuary of imagination, stocking it with paints, egg cartons, beads, and reams of paper — treasures she lovingly gathered for our creations. She sent us to piano, flute, guitar, and violin lessons.
Breaking Point - Mishpacha
Yaakov Asher takes the helm of United Torah Judaism amid a draft crisis, internal upheaval, and mounting electoral challenges. Can the veteran political operator steer the party through one of its toughest elections? Yaakov Asher, who rose through municipal politics to become mayor of Bnei Brak before spending the past 13 years in the Knesset, now finds himself at the head of United Torah Judaism’s electoral list — and facing perhaps the most difficult test of his political career.
The Leg Injury - Mishpacha
“I would never have believed it if I hadn’t been there myself!” That was all Baruch Chaim could say after Simchas Torah. Baruch Chaim, or B.C., as most people called him, has been davening at the shul for decades. Years ago, he decided to become the gabbai seforim. He stays in shul until the end of the last Shacharis minyan (it begins at 10:30), then he gathers up all the siddurim and puts them in their correct place. He dutifully fulfills this thankless job every day.
“You’re Not Listening!”
Q: My husband and I get into the same argument over and over again and I want to somehow get out of it. Here’s the pattern: He says something that doesn’t make any sense, and I point that out to him (never disrespectfully). Then he gets upset and says I’m not listening to what he’s saying. But I did listen, I just disagreed! He accuses me of ignoring what he’s saying or trying to control everything or implying that he’s stupid.
Being Wanted Isn’t Enough
Being Wanted Isn’t Enough Rachel Burnham with Bassi Gruen Suri was 28 when she met Ruvi. He had a solid job, he was popular, good-looking, and charismatic. Plus — this detail is always mentioned early in the conversation — “He wanted me.” All her friends were married, with two, three children, and she was living with her parents, who sighed heavily whenever they saw her. Ruvi was opinionated, and he didn’t appreciate hearing her opinions. But she wasn’t getting younger.
Far Afield - Mishpacha
Elisheva I was a good Bais Yaakov girl, a graduate of the prestigious and conservative Yashan high school in Yerushalayim, who believed deeply in the system I grew up with in Beitar Illit. But I struggled with some of the social codes. I often felt that our society was focused on externals instead of substance. I had a strong sense of justice and a powerful drive to seek truth.
Family First Readers React: Issue 1014
Respect, with a Caveat [Not My Type / Issue 1012] I live, and have raised my family, in an “out-of-town,” very diverse city in Israel. Baruch Hashem, all of my kids are married and raising their own families, and all have continued in the same derech in which they were raised. I’ve always instilled two important themes. 1. We are proud of who we are. We have picked our derech because we believe it is the best way to serve Hashem.
The Peace That Survived October 7
The extraordinary drama aboard the Flydubai flight that made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia over Chol Hamoed offered an unexpected glimpse into one of the Middle East’s most consequential unfinished stories. Having survived a terrorist attack in the air, Israeli passengers landed the plane in a country with which Israel has no diplomatic relations — and were met with medical assistance and warm treatment.
Jewish Brotherhood
He spent eleven years in a Kurdish prison, five of them on death row. A young Jew who had grown up in Toronto and Israel, he was far from everything he knew, with little contact to the outside. Getting him home would require years of prison visits, negotiations with an unforgiving family, and thousands of donors contributing toward his release, most of whom had never met him. They just knew he was a Jew in trouble Lying flat on your back.
Who Moved the Finish Line?
When your kids get married, the ground shifts and the rules change. You’ve reached the parenting finish line… or have you? You’re still a parent, but nothing is the same. How do you parent your married children when it requires a completely different skill set than the ones you’ve spent decades honing? The standard advice most of us have absorbed is mouth closed, pocketbook open.
Out of Line - Mishpacha
I stare out at the Golan mountains from the succah window. It makes my heart hurt, the sheer beauty of the sandy range against the blue of the Kinneret. In Brooklyn, the view from my succah window is another succah. Which is lovely, but this is transcendent. I could stay here all day, just gazing out at the world Hashem created. But of course, it’s never meant to be. My poetic musings are interrupted by the insistent ring of my cell phone.
Executive Audience
Four rebbes, plus the Skverer Rebbe’s son and Lakewood’s rosh yeshivah, came to the White House with a carefully prepared agenda.
Cruz Control - Mishpacha
Photos: AP Images Fourteen years when Ted Cruz was still trying to become Senator Ted Cruz, I interviewed him for the first time. This was back in 2012, when political candidates still had to kiss babies, shake hands, and pretend to enjoy county fair food. During that conversation, Cruz told me that one of the reasons he was running for Senate was to protect and defend Israel and the Jewish People.
The Good Fight - Mishpacha
America discovered a Torah powerhouse with 40 years of learning at his fingertips. Behind Rav Bunim Schreiber’s extraordinary mastery lies a lifelong credo: When you can’t, that’s when you have to IT WAS A SUNDAY AFTERNOON in early June, and the beis medrash at Lakewood’s Kollel Cheshek Shlomo was filling up. A large crowd had come to hear a visiting rosh yeshivah, billed as an exceptional talmid chacham.
The Love Doesn’t Stop
While many families in this “club” cringe from exposure, Rav Shimon Schneebalg has put his own shame and discomfort on hold, and gone public While many families in this club cringe from exposure, Rav Schneebalg has put his own shame and discomfort on hold and has gone public, in order to spearhead a shift in the collective thinking and to make it easier for parents who are struggling in this area.
Becoming a Vessel
Point of focus: becoming a vessel What this means They say that what you focus on expands. I’ve found this to be true time and time again. More than simply focusing on the good in my life and my family, I want to become a vessel ready to catch and contain the brachah around me. By focusing on my blessings and opening myself to seizing more of them, I grow both the brachah itself and the joy the brachah delivers. To Do Look for brachah throughout your day.
Two Little Bears
Dave and Buster’s was our sixth date. There were two other dating couples there, and I remember giving them knowing looks, trying to guess what number date they were on and how likely they were to get engaged. This, of course, was with the smug assurance that I was dating my bashert, and our impending engagement was only a matter of time. Ari was everything I’d been looking for, plus he won everything he played.
Generic Solutions
Photos: Elchanan Kotler How did Moshe Rogosnitzky — a soft-spoken, erstwhile kollel yungerman living in Eretz Yisrael, with not a degree to his name — help determine the course of President Donald Trump’s coronavirus treatment last month? Among the battery of medicines prescribed for the president by the doctors at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was a drug called famotidine — better known as Pepcid, an over-the-counter remedy for excess stomach acid.
Remorse, Regret, Release
“I made a huge mistake,” Reb Mordechai Yitzchak Samet says without fanfare. “And I paid a horrible price.” He is at home in Kiryas Joel, the chassidic enclave abutting Monroe, New York, following his early release from prison under the prison reform First Step Act that allows for home confinement from age 60. Yet thankful as he is for the shortened term, the toll of the last 18 years is evident on his careworn face.
Battle Scars - Mishpacha
Experts say that keeping each home fully stocked with whatever a child might need — a full wardrobe school supplies reading material toiletries pajamas — reduces the sense of living an unrooted nomadic life (Photos: Eli Cobin) F or years the nightmare haunted him: Shlomo is his six-year-old self standing in the hallway of his parents’ home. His mother and father each hold one of his arms soundlessly tugging him in opposite directions. He feels himself split in two.
Song in the Night
A charon shel Pesach. Echoes of Shir Hashirim, a song expressing the love between a nation and its Father. The final moments of Pesach, the chag of emunah — days of faith and loyalty and devotion reaching their climax. And as Yidden wished each other that the blessings of the Yom Tov carry them into summer, with the hiss of the Havdalah candle came the sad news: The man of faith and song and indomitable spirit was fighting for his life.
Jerusalem Album - Mishpacha
DETERMINED TO CARRY ON Yeshuos Yaakov is the formal name of the shul but the informal name is Meah Shearim shtiblach. Over a hundred years old the shul is a hub for minyanim learning round-the-clock Tehillim vigils — and once a year for festive dancing. The authentic Meah Shearim community bound by geographical proximity family ties and a shared history are made even closer by a shared ideology that often pits them against the majority.
Majesty and Mystery in Boyan
“Yes. What would you like?” “The Rebbe is looking for you. Urgently.” “I will come speak with him tomorrow.” “No, he asked that you come today.” It is Adar 5731/1971, on a side street in Haifa, and two young Gerrer chassidim are pressing Rabbi Menachem Mendel Brayer to meet with their Rebbe, the Beis Yisrael. The timing seems strange. Just days before, Rabbi Brayer’s esteemed father-in-law, Rav Mordechai Shlomo Friedman of Boyan, had left this world.
My Journey to Love
The wet slithery creature is caught by the frantic doctor then placed on me. The floundering bloody thing is a human my child no less and the warm motherly love will now flow in I think. I don’t know what to do with this individual who’s entered the room without crossing the door like an angel dropped from heaven. I look at it weak from my fight to push it out of me and disbelievingly congratulate myself on becoming a mother. That’s exciting the new title “mother ” to be worn like a crown.
