Florida Shark Attacks Injure 2 People, though Likelihood Remains ‘Low’

Two people suffered shark-related injuries just three days within one another on Florida’s Panhandle. A man was bitten by a bull shark June 5 after he hooked it while fishing near the jetties at Fort Pickens on Pensacola Beach. Three days later, someone else in the Panama City area was taken to the hospital after a shark attack. According to a Facebook post from Naval Support Activity Panama City, the shark encounter happened about 11:45 a.m. June 8, at the academy’s MWR Marina.

June 9, 2026, 3:54 p.m. ET Two people sustained shark-related injuries within three days in the Florida Panhandle. Shark attacks in the Pensacola area are extremely rare, with only six confirmed unprovoked attacks since 1882. Florida leads the U.S. in shark bites, but most incidents occur on the Atlantic coast, not the Panhandle. The odds of a fatal shark attack are approximately 1 in 4.3 million, far lower than other causes of death.
