1 Introduction Conservation depends on reliable identification and counts of flora and fauna (Bickford et al. 2007). Typically, expert opinion, field guides, and specialized tools help to achieve this goal. However, cryptic species, those with phenotypic characteristics so similar they are difficult to differentiate, pose challenges to science and management globally (Hebert et al. 2004; Cook et al. 2008; Trontelj and Fišer 2009; Delić et al. 2017; Struck et al. 2018; Yan et al. 2018).
