How the letter on your home's energy cert is worth real money
Analysis: Research shows every step up the Building Energy Rating scale can boost a home's sale price by an average of 2.7% Every step up the Building Energy Rating 15-point A1-to-G scale boosts a home's sale price by an average of 2.7%. This mandatory certificate for every home for sale or rent translates into real money: roughly €270 for every €10,000 of the property's price. For a €400,000 home, moving up just one grade adds over €10,800 to its value.
The free EU database that tells you if an appliance is actually green Original
BearFotos/Shutterstock When something breaks down, like a washing machine or television, you might find yourself in a showroom or flicking through 12 browser tabs, trying to choose between "eco-friendly" or "green" replacements. They look and cost the same, yet we currently have no way of knowing which claim, if any, is true. The European Commission has found that more than half of green claims are vague, misleading or unfounded, and four in ten come with no supporting evidence at all.

Four reasons why fully electric homes can be affordable and efficient
Across Europe, running a home – whether you need to keep it cool in the summer or heat it during winter – usually means burning imported gas. That wastes energy and creates carbon emissions, contributing to climate change. The European Commission's new electrification action plan aims to end that era, mapping out a drive to double electricity's energy share from 23% to 46% by 2040.
Your bedroom could be the unhealthiest room in your home
Close the door, shut the windows and turn up the heating, and you have all the ingredients for a sick bedroom in your home – and you spend about eight hours in there every night. Kitchens and bathrooms usually take the blame for stale air and damp. But researchers spent a winter monitoring airtight, naturally ventilated homes across Scotland. In more than four out of five homes the carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the air remained above the level considered a safe threshold for the entire night.

Promoting physical activity amongst disadvantaged and marginalised older adults: a rapid systematic review with meta-analysis
Background Physical activity is important for healthy ageing, yet participation is socially patterned and often lower among older adults experiencing disadvantage. This rapid systematic review updates and extends previous evidence by examining differential effectiveness of individual-level physical activity interventions in older adults at differing levels of advantage/disadvantage, and experiences of engaging in interventions.
Self-management strategies for menstrual cycle symptoms: a systematic review
Purpose Menstrual cycle symptoms, such as discomfort, fatigue, and mood swings, are prevalent among women and can significantly diminish quality of life. Many women employ non-clinical, self-management strategies to mitigate symptoms, yet the supporting evidence for these strategies is equivocal. This systematic review sought to identify, evaluate and synthesise existing evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) for non-clinical, self-management strategies for menstrual cycle symptoms.
Confused about your building’s energy performance? Here’s how to understand Europe’s new labels
Imagine an apartment that could be teleported across Europe. In Spain, its energy certificate might read D. In Germany, the same apartment could earn a C on a scale that runs to H. In Brussels, it might land on B, one of more than 15 subclasses. In the Netherlands, where the scale climbs to A+, it would look positively mediocre. Same walls, same boiler, same physics, eight different letters. This is not a thought experiment. It… Read complete article © The Conversation -

How the Universe may be on the verge of a paradigm shift
Opinion: Cosmological experiments carried out with increasing precision are producing funny results that no longer fit the standard model of the Universe By Dr. Eoin Ó Colgáin, Atlantic Technological University The bulk of scientific research is "normal", to use a term from philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn. A collection of accepted questions, or paradigm, is in place and scientists make incremental improvements in knowledge to address the questions in a linear or continuous way.

Battle of the Somme: new research shows detonating a massive mine under German lines too early led to a British slaughter
'The earth rose in the air to the height of hundreds of feet.': but a delay in the infantry attack meant that hundreds of British troops were killed. The Battle of the Somme began on July 1 1916 with a spectacular explosion under Hawthorn Ridge – a fortified German frontline position west of the village of Beaumont Hamel in northern France. The footage of the explosion remains one of the best-known pieces of film from the whole conflict.
What is pattern book development and how can it help ease the housing crisis?
Australian cities are grappling with ways to increase housing supply and make it more affordable. One suggested solution is “pattern book” development. The idea made headlines when proposed recently by Housing Now, an alliance of businesses and lobby groups in New South Wales. The problem, they argue, is that housing projects take years to process, due to overly lengthy processes of design, planning and public consultation.
Anisotropic distance ladder in Pantheon+supernovae
We decompose Pantheon+ Type Ia supernovae (SN) in hemispheres on the sky finding angular variations up to 4 km/s/Mpc, corresponding to a statistical significance up to 1.9σ, in the Hubble constant H0 both in the SH0ES redshift range 0.0233<z<0.15 and in extended redshift ranges. The variations are driven largely by variations in absolute magnitude from SN in Cepheid hosts but are reinforced by SN in the Hubble flow. H0 is larger in a hemisphere encompassing the CMB dipole direction.
Stochastic modelling and synthesis of dynamic fish recruitment productivity in the Celtic Seas ecoregion
The ICES Celtic Seas ecoregion (CSE) covers a major part of the northwestern European continental shelf. This ecoregion also includes areas of the deeper eastern Atlantic Ocean as well as coastal waters that are heavily influenced by oceanic inputs (ICES, 2021a). Previous studies in the area suggest that marine communities respond to the combined effect of fisheries and climate (Lynam et al., 2010).

Cosmological models are built on a simple, century-old idea -- but new observations demand a radical rethink
Our ideas about the Universe are based on a century-old simplification known as the cosmological principle. It suggests that when averaged on large scales, the Cosmos is homogeneous and matter is distributed evenly throughout. This allows a mathematical description of space-time that simplifies the application of Einstein’s general theory of relativity to the Universe as a whole. Our cosmological models are based on this assumption.
Inevitable manifestation of wiggles in the expansion of the late Universe
Abstract Using the fact that the comoving angular diameter distance to the last scattering surface is strictly constrained almost model independently, we show that, for any model agreeing with the standard ΛCDM model on its background dynamics at z∼0 and size of the comoving sound horizon at last scattering, the deviations of the Hubble radius from the one of the standard ΛCDM model must be a member of the set of admissible wavelets.
