They now predict a well-below average number of named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes in the Atlantic basin this year. This update reflects a downward trend in expected storm activity. In April, their outlook predicted 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5). Now, those numbers have dropped to 9, 4, and 1, respectively.

Dangerous rip currents and thunderstorms may interrupt Memorial Day Weekend plans

This Memorial Day Weekend may be hindered by dangerous rip currents, thunderstorm chances, and hot temperatures. However, most of the thunderstorm activity should occur on Saturday and Sunday with possible rain showers on Monday. Saturday may have more widespread and frequent thunderstorms compared to Sunday. Rip current statements are in effect along the east coast and Panhandle. They are frequent and dangerous. Additionally, Rip Current Statements have already been issued for this weekend.
